    Week beginning 6th June

We have reached the end of the half term and the children and staff are now on holiday for one week. We all hope you have a safe and relaxing break.
Assembly: this week we were wowed by the children in Safari Class who led their first-class assembly all about minibeasts. We were blown away by their confidence and knowledge. Well done Safari!

Jubilee: throughout this week, children have been learning about the Queen and Jubilee during History Week. Yesterday, we had an amazing day in school celebrating the Queen’s Jubilee. The children and staff all looked fantastic, dressed in red, white and blue and I am sure you would agree that their dance through the eras at the end of the day was truly impressive, as was the Jubilee song, written for this event. Our thanks go to Mrs Baines and Mrs Buchan for helping our children learn this routine over the past week. The children have also had a great time learning to maypole dance with Mrs Yates which you will be able to see in action at the Summer Fair. It was a wonderful opportunity to welcome you all back to the school for this afternoon performance and we hope you enjoyed it, it was lovely to see so many of you.
    Commemorative Bookmarks:
on Friday, your child was given a souvenir bookmark, a gift from The Hayes, to commemorate Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee. A memento that we hope your child will treasure and remember special memories when they read their favourite book. We also bought a bookmark for all staff as well.

Dance Club: Mrs Baines runs a dance club in school and presently has some spaces, if you would like your child to join. Please click this link to access the flier: https://primarysite-prod-sorted.s3.amazonaws.com/hayes-primary-school/UploadedDocument/c5c3ebd4-e723-4f1d-bcb9-0f1da5e6a11d/contemporary-motion-dance-thurs2022.pdf which gives more information.  Dance class runs from 3.10pm until 4.10pm on Thursdays. Places for children from Year 2 upwards.
Phonics: when we return after the half term break, the children in Year One will be sitting their Phonics Screening check. Parents of children in this year group will have received a letter with further details about this screening.
School Trips: on Friday 10th of June, the children in Reception will be heading out on a trip to Bockett’s Farm. If you have not yet paid for this opportunity, please log on to ParentPay to do so. Thank you.
Father’s Day: the Father’s day gift room will also be opening on Friday. This is a PTA event where children can pay £3 to choose and wrap a gift for Daddy or another special person. Tickets can be purchased for this event on the PTA page. This event will run at lunch times until Thursday 16th June.
School Summer Fete: please stick the 25th June in your diaries as our summer fair is BACK! After 2 years of not being able to run this event, we are so excited to be able to invite you to attend this year. It is always a fantastic day out so bring your friends and family along to join in the fun! Please see attached flier for more details.
Share Your Creativity in the Great Outdoors Photography Competition: it is time again for a new season of photos for our Great Outdoors Seasonal photography competition. The first competition, held in autumn 2021 was based on the miracles of autumn nature, followed by winter and now we have spring! Believe it or not, spring began on the 20th March and ends on the 21st June. We know it feels like summer, but there is still time to take some pictures of spring during the holiday. Please see flier for more details. Good luck!

Have a lovely half term and see you on the 6th June.

    Week beginning 23rd May 2022

Well done to the children in Class 8 who wowed us yesterday with their amazing assembly about one of our school values, self-belief. They did a great job of showing off their skills and talents – Britain’s Got Talent eat your heart out! This has been uploaded to Class 8 Google classroom so parents and carers can enjoy.

Jubilee: coming up next week, we are celebrating History Week with a number of special events taking place to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee.  Details of these events were provided in last week’s bulletin but we would like to remind you that on Friday the 27th the children are invited to wear something royal themed or red, white and blue (please no football shirts). You are invited to join us at 2:40pm on Friday, to watch a whole school dance – Jubilee Mash Up. We are really looking forward to it and cannot wait to see you all there. We will also be having a Jubilee lunch which is a picnic on the field on Friday, where we all eat together. On this day, the kitchen will not be providing hot food.

CSSP Festival: on Tuesday, the children in Year 6 are participating in an athletics festival in collaboration with the CSSP (Croydon Schools Sports Partnership). This will take place in school. Please can we remind all parents to ensure the children are wearing the correct school PE kits which consists of white shorts and a white T-shirt. If it is cold they may wear plain dark coloured tracksuit bottoms and a grey sweatshirt with The Hayes logo.  We are noticing an increase in children wearing logo brands and items of different colours. Please adhere to the home school agreement and send your children in the correct uniform. Thank you.

Water Bottles and Sun Cream: also, as the weather gets warmer please ensure that your children have a named water bottle in school. Remaining hydrated is key to being able to focus. If it is a particularly sunny day, you may wish to apply sunscreen to your children. Our staff will not apply lotion to any children.

INSET: we are still in the position of finalising the INSET days for next year but can confirm that the 1st and 2nd of September WILL be INSET days. This may help those of you hoping to book a summer break.

Assembly: Safari class will be recording their class assembly on Thursday. This will be shared with parents via the children’s Google classroom.

Expectations: also, it was reported to us by a concerned parent that a group of Year 6 children walking home alone, ran out of school at speed and ended up in the road. Had there have been a car passing, there would have been a very serious accident. If your child walks home alone, please remind them about road safety, expectations and the importance of travelling safely.

Parking: it has been reported that some parents are parking on the zig zag lines outside our school. This is illegal and dangerous – as is parking with your wheels on the Zebra crossing. Please think about the safety of our children and stop. Thank you.

On Friday, we break up for half term (normal time).
We wish you all a happy and restful break and look forward to welcoming you back to school on Monday 6th June.

    Week beginning 16th May 2022

Well Done: we must start this week’s bulletin by saying a HUGE well done to the children in Year 6 who have made us so proud when sitting their KS2 SATs. They all worked incredibly hard and showed us that they were being the ‘best they could be’. Whatever the outcome we are very proud of them. The past 2 years have posed many challenges for our children and they have demonstrated huge resilience despite this. We continue to work hard with our children to ensure they are secondary ready but will also be planning a number of fun events towards the end of the term to mark their final months at Primary School. A massive thank you to all the staff involved in our children’s educational journey from EYFS – Year 6. Superstars!

Year 2 SATs: our children in Year 2 continue with their SATs assessments and these will be concluded by the end of May. Good luck, all!

School Photographer: this Monday, our school photographer will be in taking class/group photos. We have listened to parent feedback and requested that the traditional style photographs are taken, with children in rows rather than small groups. We shall send information on how these keepsakes can be ordered, shortly.

Croydon Schools Music Association (CSMA) Festival Junior Choir: the children taking part in these concerts will begin their area rehearsals next week where they get to sing with children from other schools taking part. The first of these area rehearsals is taking place on Monday afternoon at St Nicks School. Parents of children taking part should collect from St Nicks at 3:30pm.

CSSP: the Croydon Schools Sports Partnership will be in on Tuesday to work with the children in Years 3 and 4 on the development of netball skills.

Class Assembly: on Wednesday, the children in Class 6 will be recording their assembly which will be shared with parents via Google classroom and on Thursday, the children in Class 8 will be doing the same. We will let you know via text message when this is available for you to view.

Jubilee Dance Mash Up: on Friday, we are welcoming Mrs Baines into school to lead dance workshops with our children, starting in Year 1 and Year 2. She will be working with all other classes on Monday 23rd May, to prepare for our whole school performance to end The Hayes Platinum Jubilee Celebrations on Friday 27th May, from 2:40pm on the school playground. Below is a preview of our activities during the final week of this summer half term, for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee:

    Maypole Dancing with Mrs Yates
(throughout the week with all year groups during music lessons, where possible)

Jubilee Dance Mash Up Workshops and Dance with Mrs Baines
After two days of workshops for all children and using music from the last 70 years, we will be opening the school gates on Friday 27th May, from 2:40pm to parents/carers. This, so you can see and perhaps join in with your child and all of our talented children and staff perform the Platinum Jubilee Mash Up Dance! This will take place from approximately 2:45pm. Over 400 children will be dancing in the middle of the playground, please ensure that you stand well back from the dance floor, using the field and sides of the playground to distance. Many thanks.
It is going to be a very exciting week!

Football Team: congratulations to the football team who came second in the league. Well done to all children and their coaches, especially Ms Hale.

Mobile Phones: in Year 6 should only be brought to school by children who walk home alone. Thank you.

Medical Appointments: we are noticing an increase in parents collecting their children for appointments during the school day. Please can we remind you that this should be for emergencies only e.g. if a child had cracked a tooth and was in pain, this would require an urgent appointment. A regular check-up is not a reason to remove your child/children from school. Please make all non-urgent appointments during the half term or after school, thank you.

We hope you continue to have a lovely weekend.
    The Hayes Team

    Week beginning 9th May 2022

We start this bulletin by thanking Class 7 for their wonderful class assembly which was all about natural disasters. They delivered their assembly with great confidence and sang beautifully.  It provided a reminder to us all about how lucky we are to have the lives that we do and made sure that we all knew what we would need to include in an emergency earthquake pack! Well done Class 7.

School Census Day: on the 19th of May, it is our school census day. Part of our funding is based upon the number of children who have a school dinner on this day. As such, we have a special menu for this day. Please, if you can, do encourage your child to have a school dinner on this day. A copy of the menu will be emailed to you next week, thank you.

Swimming: please may we remind all families that if your child is not swimming, they must have a valid reason and a note from home to explain what this is (e.g. plaster cast, period etc). Swimming is an important part of our curriculum and all children are expected to participate in these lessons. Children who report that they are not to swim, without a parent letter to back this up, will be provided with a spare kit from school and asked to join in. Please may we also thank those of you who have contributed to lessons on ParentPay and remind those who have not to please do so. The pool is a huge asset to our school and a very costly one, it would be a travesty if we had to teach more private lessons or lease it out to an outside company, because this would impact on our children’s lessons. Many, many thanks in advance.

SATs: next week, our Year 6 children will be sitting their SATs exams (Monday-Thursday). We are super proud of the children and have made sure they know this. They have been working so hard to prepare for these assessments and all we ask is that they live our vision and ‘be the best they can be’. Regardless of test outcomes, the children are amazing and to sit these papers with the disruptions to their education that they have encountered over the last 2 years, we think they are brilliant! To help them be the best they can be, please do ensure they get to bed at a decent time and eat a healthy breakfast. It is also important that they are in school on time. A child is not able to enter into the test room if the test has already begun so punctuality is really crucial.

Assembly: also, next week, the children in Reception will be recording their class assembly. This will be shared with parents and the rest of the school via Google Classroom. We will let you know when it is ready to view.

Pyjamarama: on Friday 13th, the School Council have requested that we take part in a 'Pyjamarama' event. This is a book trust initiative that encourages the children to come to school in their Pyjamas and spend some time reading a favourite book. Many of us enjoy reading a book at bedtime. This initiative is designed to reinforce the importance of daily reading and to help promote a love of reading for pleasure. If your child takes part in this, we ask for a donation of £1 which will go towards replenishing our books in the book corners. Many thanks.

Switch off engines for cleaner air: last term and as part of our STARs work (Sustainable Travel: Active, Responsible and Safe), our children took part in Idling workshops. This taught them that pollution created by idling vehicles disproportionately affects children. Not only are many schools daily hot-spots for vehicle idling but young people have greater exposure to harmful pollutants as they take twice as many breaths per minute (compared to adults) and breathe closer to exhaust pipes. During the workshops, led by MP Smarter Travel, our children created the design for this amazing banner which will be displayed outside our school –we hope it helps to continue to raise awareness to create sustained, positive changes to school journeys and healthier air for everyone. Try walking, scooting, cycling or even park and stride – active travel is a great way to look after our bodies!

    Have a lovely weekend.
