    Week Beginning 28th October 2019

Today we break up for half term and we wish you all a restful break!

This week we have had lots of fun. We congratulate all of the children who participated in the cross country event in Lloyds Park. It was a slippery course (following much rain) which was uphill for the most part but all of the children taking part were great ambassadors of the school and made us all very proud. A special congratulations to Chloe in Year 1 who achieved a medal, placing 3rd! There are further cross country events taking place at Woodcote on 16th November 2019, 18th January 2020 and 14th March 2020 for children in Years 3-6. If your child is chosen to participate we will let you know in the coming weeks. We also say a massive well done to the singers who performed at the CSMA Music Festival on Tuesday. They were invited to sing with 200 other junior Croydon children at one of the opening concerts of the Fairfield Halls and sang with much enthusiasm. They did The Hayes proud.

Year 2 have enjoyed a great day with the circus performer to conclude their learning in IPC on this topic. We hope that parents joining us at 2:30 enjoy watching the children perform their new circus skills!

The Year 1 children also enjoyed their pirate day at school and looked amazing!

Here’s what’s coming up after the break...

Monday 28th October is an INSET day and therefore school is not open to the children. We welcome the children back to school on Tuesday 29th October.

On Wednesday, we are holding our first Reception Open Morning for parents of children considering school places for September 2020. Anybody wishing to attend should phone the office to book a place. The morning will consist of a talk from Miss Slade, our Head Teacher, and a tour of the school.

On Thursday and Friday the children in Year 6 will be participating in a 2 day workshop with ‘The Anne Frank Project’. One of our school values is tolerance and as such, we believe it is important to teach our children about prejudice and discrimination and the importance of equality. The aim of the workshop is to increase the children’s knowledge, develop their skills and build their confidence to change attitudes and challenge all forms of prejudice and discrimination. We believe education is a really powerful tool to ensure that children are made more aware of what constitutes prejudice and discrimination and can equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge to challenge attitudes and actions. The children will explore the story of Anne Frank and relate this to modern day scenarios. We are confident that it will be a really thought provoking and valuable learning experience.

On Friday 1st November, there will be a Christmas jumper sale where parents can buy a pre-loved Christmas jumper for their children at very reasonable prices. A huge thank you to all of the parents who have kindly donated jumpers that their children have grown out of!

Please can we remind parents that our staff should not be asked to hand out sweets for children’s birthdays. We are an accredited ‘healthy school’ and as such should not be handing out sweets. If you would like to mark your child’s special day we encourage children to donate a favourite book for their class to enjoy in the book corner which will be marked inside with the name of who has donated it and for what occasion. Thank you.

Please may we also remind parents of children who attend Wraparound Care to contact the office if your child is not going to attend After School Club. When staff are not informed they then have to spend time investigating why the child has not turned up as expected. Likewise, if your child is unwell, please can we remind parents to call the school first thing to report their absence. The phone number is 02086604863. If calling before the office opens at 8:00, please leave a message on the answer phone stating your child’s name, class and reason for absence. Thank you.

Finally, a reminder to parents of children in Year 6 that the closing date for secondary school application forms is the 31st October. Failure to submit your form on time will  put you in a less favourable position when it comes to allocating school places, so please ensure this deadline is met. Thank you.

    Have a great week.

  • Week Beginning 14th October

    Fri 11 Oct 2019

Week beginning Monday 14th October 2019

Today in assembly we celebrated the Harvest Festival with Class 9 leading the assembly. They did a great job helping us to all to learn about where some of the food we enjoy originates from and reminding us all to be grateful for the food we have. We thank you very much for your generous donations which we will be giving to the Purley Food Hub. We were also joined in assembly by Trustees from the Coulsdon Nursery Fund. They have very generously funded our brand new Soundfield system in the school hall and in a few questions. We are very grateful to this organisation.

Thank you also to all of the families who paid a £1 and wore yellow in recognition of World Mental Health day on Thursday. We raised a staggering £216.60 for the charity Young Minds who support children and young people experiencing mental ill health. Thank you once again for your kindness and generosity.

Please can we remind parents that in order to keep our swimming pool up and running, we request a donation of £55.00 per child per year. We consider this to be excellent value for money as it works out to less than £1.50 per lesson. These donations have now been added to your ParentPay accounts and can be paid in instalments throughout the year. Without your contributions we run the risk of losing this amazing facility which costs a huge amount of money to run. We are so lucky that all of our children from Year R to Year 6 have access to a swimming lesson once a week.

    Coming up next week…

On Monday, the children participating in the CSMA concert have a final rehearsal at The Phoenix (Fairfield) Halls and will be travelling to and from this rehearsal by minibus. Details regarding the concert in the evening have already been sent to you in a letter from Miss Slade. We hope you have managed to get your tickets from the box office and look forward to seeing you there!

On Tuesday, weather permitting, we wish good luck to our cross country runners in Year 1 and 2 in the morning and Year 3 and 4 in the afternoon. This event will take place at Lloyds Park and the children will travel to and from the event by minibus.

On Wednesday, the children in Class 12 will be leading their assembly to the school. Parents of children in this class are invited to attend at 9:15 in the school hall.

On Friday, the children in Year 2 are ending their IPC unit with a visit from the Circus entertainer, if you have not already consented to this on ParentPay, please can we urge you do so. Thank you.

On Friday, next week there will be a scrunchie (hair band) sale in the playground after school. This has been organised by some Year 6 pupils who are fundraising for the Royal Marsden Hosptial. Scrunchies will be available for £1 each so please remember to bring in your money if you wish to support this charity.

We break up for half term at normal time on Friday. Wishing you a restful week off school. We look forward to welcoming you back on Tuesday 29th October 2019 (please note Monday the 28th is an INSET day and therefore the school is not open to children).

  • Week beginning 7.10.19

    Sun 06 Oct 2019

    Coming up this week:

We start the week by warmly welcoming our Grandparents to have breakfast with the children in recognition of Grandparents Day (6th October). Those hoping to attend this event would have indicated their intention via the doodle poll sent out last week. The timings for this event are as follows:

    8:00 Reception
    8:10 Year1
    8:20 Year 2
    8:30 Year 3 and 4
    8:40 Year 5 and 6

Grandparents attending with 2 or more siblings should choose one of the allocated slots and attend with all of the children together. Please may we remind parents and grandparents that children who finish breakfast early will need to be supervised until the doors open at 8:45 when their teachers will be in their classrooms to supervise them. All children will need to be back in class by 9:00am for registration.

On Wednesday we will be hosting our KS1 SATs workshop for parents of children in Year 2. Please come along to the hall for a 9:00am start. This meeting is designed for parents of children in Year 2 to go through what will happen at the end of the year when children will be sitting their SATs. It will also be an opportunity to ask any questions you may have about these statutory assessments.
*In the afternoon, the children participating in the upcoming Fairfield halls concert with the CSMA choir will attend a second rehearsal at Park Hill Junior School. As last week, we will be travelling to the rehearsal by train and returning via minibus. We aim to be back at school by 4:00pm. Children may wish to bring a water bottle with them…singing can be thirsty work! Please also note that tickets for this event are now on sale at the Fairfield Halls Box Office. They are not for sale through the school.
*We wish good luck to the children from Years 5 and 6 who are representing the school in the upper junior cross country event taking place at Lloyd park. The children will be running a mile, competing with children in other Croydon schools. If your child is participating in this event, you will have received additional information regarding timings and support.

Thursday 10th October marks World Mental Health Day. We will be supporting the charity Young Minds who provide invaluable support to children suffering mental ill health. We work hard to remove the stigma around mental ill health and want our children to know that if they are suffering, they can seek help. Consequently we will be participating in #helloyellow where children are invited to wear an item of yellow to school as part of their uniform. This could be a yellow hat, t-shirt, socks, hairband or bow tie for example for a small donation towards this charity (recommended amount £1).  Additionally, we have members of staff who are trained in understanding Children and Young People’s Mental Health who are available to have a chat about any worries or concerns that you may wish to share. We don’t claim to be experts, but we may well be able to sign post you to the support that you or your child may need.

*On Thursday morning at 9:00am there will be a KS2 meeting in the hall for parents of children in Year 6. This meeting will give parents an indication of what they can expect in terms of the statutory assessments that all year 6 children have to take in May next year and how they can support their children prepare for these assessments. For those who are unable to make it, the presentation will be on our school website and, after reviewing this, questions can be emailed to deputy@hayesprimary.croydon.sch.uk.

On Friday morning Class 11 are leading our Harvest Festival Assembly at 9:15. With this in mind, as of Monday we are welcoming donations for this event of non-perishable foods and toiletries, all of which will be donated to the Purley Food Hub. Parents of children in class 11 are welcome to join us in the hall for this special event. After school, the girls have an away football match against Coulsdon C of E. We wish them the best of luck!

Lastly, on Friday our PTA are hosting their Fireworks event. Doors open at 5:30 and the main fireworks display will begin at 7:00pm. Unfortunately, due to strict Health and Safety requirements, there will be no tickets on sale on the gate. All tickets must have been purchased in advance via the PTA web page. We are sure it will be an AMAZING event! We look forward to seeing you there!

We have been contacted by a number of local residents about the speed at which some of our parents have been driving along Hayes Lane at drop off and pick up. Please can we remind you that this is a 20mph zone and to ensure the safety of all, we would appreciate if you would adhere to this speed. Thank you.

Some advanced notice, there will be a Year 4 Fashion Show for Yr 4 parents to attend as part of the IPC topic on Tuesday5th November at 2.30pm. The Year 4 team would love to see you there.

Have a great rest of Sunday!
