    Week Beginning 30th January, 2023
Well done to Class 10 for their wonderful assembly on Wednesday. They performed with confidence in front of KS2 and many parents and were amazing! We were all educated about mountains (Geography focus)- did you know that the highest point of a mountain is called a summit or a peak, the tallest mountain in the world is Mount Everest and the highest mountain in the UK is Ben Nevis, reaching an elevation of 4,406 feet? If you want to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, you need to make sure you need to wrap up (it is cold at the top) and be careful because you need to acclimatise to the altitude because then, you will be less fatigued! Well done to Class 10, Miss Moll and Mrs Field – a great assembly, with much learning!
Mixed Football Club: a huge well done to our mixed football team who this week, played two matches, fantastically! On Wednesday, they beat Oakwood 4-1 and on Thursday 26th, they beat Oasis Byron 8-1. BIG WINS! Well done to our team – amazing results, we are all incredibly proud of you!
CSMA Junior Choir: to inform parents of a change of rehearsal venue (making it easier for us!), the rehearsal on Thursday 9th February (130-330pm) which was at St Nicholas school is now in our school hall. Please collect from The Hayes, at 330pm. Monday’s rehearsals will continue, as usual.
Swimming: at The Hayes, we consider ourselves to be extremely fortunate to have our own swimming pool on site and as you are aware, we offer all children a fortnightly, forty-minute swimming lesson with a qualified swimming instructor and assistant, who we employ directly. As reported, heating the pool has increased by 180% and we are finding it increasingly difficult to fund. Therefore, if you have not paid £55 or anything towards this cost, please can we encourage you to do so. It can be paid overtime, as well. Thank you!
Atom Prime: thank you for your feedback on our online homework platform. Although we will still subscribe to this platform, Y3-5 will be giving out other homework and will not be using it, and Y6 will continue to set homework on the platform, alongside other work.
The PTA: school disco will be held on Friday 24th February with a slight change to the advertised times sent out via class reps:
    *Reception and Years 1 & 2: 3.30 - 4.30pm. A snack and drink will be provided.
    *Years 3 & 4: 4.45 - 5.45pm.
    *Years 5 & 6: 6.00 - 7.00pm.
A tuck shop will be available for both junior discos and you can buy tickets from: https://www.pta-events.co.uk/thehayes/index.cfm#.Y9QKiuSnwlQ until Monday 20th February at 10pm. Further information will be sent nearer the time.

    What Is On This Week?
National Story Telling week: we love to share a book at The Hayes and this week is a celebration of the power of sharing stories. Stories teach us about the world, they allow us to step into someone else’s shoes and feel empathy, they help us to relax and escape and they can help develop essential literacy skills. Click on this link to access many resources you can access at home.
Safer Internet Day 2023: is coming up on Tuesday 7th February. It is centred around conversations with its theme ‘Want to talk about it?’ It’s never too early or too late to start an online safety conversation and keep it going. Please click on this link to see tips from Internet Matters, to support your child’s digital journey. Over this next week, our friends from 3Discovery (@ThreeDiscovery) will deliver ESafety workshops across the school and will also present in assembly on Monday. We are looking forward to it!
Tuesday: there will be a Carroty Wood meeting for Year 5 parents, to take place in Class 9. There will be a creche available if you have children that need childcare for the duration of the meeting.
Thursday: we look forward to Class 4’s assembly starting at 9:10am. Parents and carers of Class 4, we look forward to seeing you, we know this is going to be a great assembly!
Friday: the Infant choir will be rehearsing at St.Marys Catholic School, Croydon from 1:30-2:55pm. Please note, in the spring term, the choir rehearses for a performance at the Fairfield Hall – to be part of a massed choir with other Croydon infant children. They will be travelling via public transport, and should return back to Kenley station for 3:40pm (letter to follow on Monday). We will require parent helpers for this to take place, please email the office if you can help on this day. More than 50+ children signed up and the CSMA choir is limited to 30 children because of the numbers allowed to take part. Therefore, the first spaces will go to children in Y2 and then Mrs Sinclair will audition children from Y1 (in a fun way!). Letter to follow!

Have a great rest of the weekend.

    Week beginning 23rd January 2023
A huge well done to Class 3, for their amazing assembly on Thursday. They taught us all about space and the planets and did you know that Mae Jemison, an engineer, physician, and former NASA astronaut, made history when she became the first African-American woman to travel to space, in 1992? Of particular mention was the Planets song that teaches the planets in our solar system. Class 3 were able to, in 4 seconds, say the planets really quickly (in 4 seconds!) from the first to the last: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune! Well done Class 3 and it was great to see so many of our parents and other family members who came to support!

PTA: 1000s of thanks to our amazing PTA for their immense hard work, particularly over the December season. 12 days of Christmas, Breakfast with Santa, Christmas Fayre, Elfridges, refreshments at the Year 6 Drama (with Junior Choir) production, to name but a few – raising over £7500! Thank you!

    This week….

Additionally, Monday rehearsals will continue after school, and Year 3 children are welcome to join us for these, if they wish (the songs will also be performed during our summer concert). A letter will go out on Monday with further information about the concert and rehearsals. If you can walk with the choir to the rehearsal on Wednesday (we do need parent support for this to take place), please either let the office know or tick the box on ParentPay – which will be ready by end of the day on Monday. Thank you.

    Week beginning 9th January 2023
WELCOME BACK and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

We hope you all had a restful break and enjoyed some time together with friends and families over the winter break. We would also like to thank you once more for the very generous gifts and kind words written in cards to our staff. Your kindness was much appreciated. We are delighted to welcome you all back to school for the Spring term and have lots planned over the coming weeks. We will shortly be updating our school calendar on the website so please do ensure this is synced to your phone so important events are not missed.

Staffing: firstly, we would like to update you regarding some new members of staff who are joining The Hayes this term. As you are aware Mrs Patel in the office left before Christmas and we are delighted to welcome Miss Hardcastle who has taken on her role as office administrator. We also welcome Ms Deighan who has joined our Inclusion team as an administrative assistant and will be supporting Mrs Roberts in the co-ordination of meetings, reviews and SEND paperwork. Additionally, we welcome two new members of staff in our Reception department, Ms Ward who joins our support staff team and is currently working in Safari class and Mrs Williams who has taken on the role of the new class teacher for Rainforest. Mrs Williams is a very experienced teacher and brings with her a wealth of knowledge and skills. We are delighted to welcome these individuals to our staffing team and are sure you will join us in making them all feel very welcome in our school community.
There have also been some internal staff changes to make you aware of. Mrs Rich, one of our Higher Level Teaching Assistants will be stepping down from her HLTA role towards the end of January, to take on a new nurture role that focuses on supporting children with their emotional wellbeing and mental health. She will continue to provide ELSA support and may do some ad hoc cover of classes as required but will be working three days a week rather than full time. To cover Mrs Yates HLTA position, we are delighted to congratulate Mrs Kioufi who was successfully appointed in this role. Mrs Kioufi is a qualified HLTA and is well known to the children. She will now be covering more whole classes across the school.

Water Bottles: a reminder to ensure your child has a water bottle in school, it is essential that they remain hydrated.

School Council: this week our School Council met to begin to discuss their plans and aspirations for 2023. Pupil voice is hugely important to us at The Hayes. If your child has any thoughts/ideas about how to further improve our school, please remind them to talk to their class representatives. All opinions are listened to and valued.

Reception Applications 2023: Mrs Scola would like to remind you all that the applications for Reception 2023 are completed and submitted to Croydon Council by closing date of 15th January 2023.

Reception Dental Checks: next week, the children in EYFS have dental checks in school on Wednesday 11th January. Please do return your consent forms to ensure your children can participate in this important check. Thank you.

Football: on Thursday 12th January, there is a football match at home against Ridgeway. Kick-off is at 3:30 and we wish the team the best of luck! Be the best you can be!

Worries and Concerns: please may we remind all parents that if you have a worry or concern about anything that you think may have happened in school, please come directly to the school. Under no circumstances must you approach any of the children in our school directly on the playground or elsewhere. An adult approaching a child can be extremely intimidating and is never acceptable. Please direct any concerns to school staff who will investigate the matter and report back to you. Thank you for your co-operation.

Congratulations! Lastly, we would like to express our enormous congratulations to Miss Hale and her partner who have shared that they are expecting their first baby at the beginning of May. We are very pleased for them and look forward to meeting the new addition in a few months’ time. We are in the process of advertising for maternity cover and will update parents of children in Class 3 as soon as possible about these arrangements.

Swimming will resume tomorrow and this will be for children in odd number classes (and rainforest).

We hope you have enjoyed your first week back and have had a great weekend.
    All the best,
    The Hayes Team
