    Week beginning 1.7.19

Another busy and eventful week has zoomed past us.

Many congratulations to the athletics team who competed in the Croydon Athletics at Croydon Arena last week. They all showed excellent team spirit and self-belief: we had a Year 5 sprint, Year 6 throw, Year 3 sprint, Year 6 800m and boys relay who got through to the finals and did superbly to get there. Well done to these children and all who participated, always aiming to be the best you can be. We are very proud of you all.

On Wednesday, our Year 4 musicians performed in their Sound Start concert to parents and to children in Year 3. They have worked hard all year to learn their instruments and showed us what they had achieved in a very short space of time.

Thank you to all our parents and teachers who supported their children with their learning.

Thursday evening was the first of our Music is Magic concerts, this for our instrumentalists. An amazing evening full of incredibly talented musicians, very impressive. Another very proud moment at The Hayes. Thank you to our parents who supported this event and to the teachers who have enabled our children to a achieve a high level of musicianship. Well done children!

Sports Day on Friday was a resounding success with all of our children actively taking part with enjoyment, passion and resilience. Yet another moment to enjoy and to feel pride in. Our children were all stars! Thank you to all those that came along to support the children and a huge thank you to CSSP, Miss Smith and all of our secondary helpers from Oasis Academy who made the day go smoothly. Well done to the Blue teams (Seacole) who won overall for the Juniors and Infants.

Our Summer Fair on Saturday was a resounding success, packed full of families, fun and smiling faces. The summer sun beat down on us whilst we bounced on inflatables, played Hungry Hippos, bumped a few cars, Water Zorbed, became a Princess, ate cakes and burgers, bought toys and raffle tickets, had our faces painted, sponged a few teachers, drank Pimms (and water) and listened to our children sing. A massive well done and thank you to our wonderful PTA and volunteers, without whom these events could not take place. There were many stalls to man and manned they were! 1000s of thanks again – we really do appreciate all that you do.

Photos of last week’s events will be on our website over the next week.

The children looked very smart on Monday for the school photographer. We will provide details of how to purchase your child’s class photo next week.

    Coming up next week…

We welcome two children from Warlingham School on work experience next week who will be working in KS2.

Book People Children’s Bus will be visiting on Wednesday where the children will have the opportunity to browse the shelves during the school day and purchase a book. Each class will have the chance to visit the bus during the course of the day and every book sold raises money for our school to buy books and resources for our classrooms. The bus will also be in the playground after school until 4.30pm if you would like to take a look. Further details will follow next week.

Also, on Wednesday, the school photographer will be returning to take a whole school photo to celebrate our 60th year. Please ensure that your children are wearing full school uniform and looking smart. Thank you.

On Thursday, we have a Science Day. Children in Year 3 and 6 will have a visit from “KidzFit” and be taking part in body science activities during the day to help them understand how their bodies work. Thank you to Mrs Derodra for organising this. The costs of the activities are on Parentpay. Please make your payment and consent online. Thank you

Year 5 will be visiting Riddlesdown Colligate to take part in a variety of STEM workshops. The children will need to be in school at 8.30am and will return ready to be collected at 3.30pm from The Hayes.

Also on Thursday, Year 3 & 4 tennis players are representing the Croydon Borough at the School Games Finals tournament at Crystal Palace on Thursday. We wish them the best of luck.

Finally, on Friday we are hosting our SEND coffee afternoon from 1:30 to 3:00pm in the breakfast club room. Please do come along and join us if you feel this is something that would interest you.

    Have a good week ahead.

A huge well done to the children in class 3 who led our whole school assembly on Wednesday. They did a wonderful job in teaching us all about the importance of recycling.

We would also like to say a massive well done to all of the children who took part in the mini marathon event at Beaumont yesterday. We are proud to report that we won the trophy once again! Not only did our children win the competition with their brilliant running and determination, they behaved beautifully and cheered on all the other competitors demonstrating great sportsmanship and kindness. Thank you to all the parents and carers who came along to support the event. Your encouragement was amazing.

If you have not had a chance to visit our school website recently, please have a look as our Gallery has now been updated with photos of recent events.

We would also like all the families who have been/ will be donating items for this event.

    Year 5 Parents

It has come to our attention that some parents of children in Year 5 have begun to think about secondary transfer for their children. Please can we inform you that the local authority admissions booklet is not yet available on the local authority website but as soon as we are informed that this is available we will let you know. In addition, we have also booked a member of local authority staff from the admissions department to lead a parent workshop in September to answer any questions you have about the process, date TBA. As a school we will not be advertising open mornings as we usually have approximately 15 different schools that our children transfer to at the end of Year 6 all of whom have different events and dates that these take place. Choosing a secondary school is not something that we should advise on as it is down to parental preference and we all have different tastes and views. Please do click on this link to check when the admissions booklet is published, you will find all of the information you need. Additionally, you can go to any secondary school's website to see if there are details on there: https://www.croydon.gov.uk/education/schools-new/school-admissions/starting-secondary-school

    Swimming

In order to generate much needed funds to maintain the running of our school pool you may be aware that we now hire our pool out at the weekends and during school holidays to an organisation called Great Waves who provide swimming lessons for children. As we are working in collaboration with one another they have kindly agreed to provide 4 children in our school a week's worth of swimming in the school holidays free of charge. These children will be selected at random. If you are interested, in this opportunity you must be available for the whole week, (Monday - Friday) week commencing 29th July between 8.30am - 10.30am for a half an hour lesson each day. If you are available and interested in being part of the prize draw please pop into the office to put your child's name into a box by Friday 28th June. On this date, 4 names will be selected at random and we will be in contact with you if your child's name has been pulled out.

    Have a great week.

If you have more than one child in the school, please chose one time slot and attend with both children at this time. Thank you. Our thanks also go to the members of St Barnabus Church who help to run this event in for our school community.

Next week it is the start of our Healthy Schools Week where we give our children a big reminder of the importance of living healthy lives through healthy diet, regular exercise and a focus on mental well-being. During Healthy Schools Week, our children will be focusing on life saving skills in their swimming lessons. Please can you provide them with some pyjamas or a pair of shorts and a T-shirt to wear in the water over their swim wear. Thank you. I have attached a letter for you which will explain a little bit more about this week, including some healthy challenges that you can take part in.

*We wish good luck to our children in Year 5 who are taking part in the Rounders Final at Royal Russell on Monday. This event is from 4-6 pm. Good luck team!
*On Tuesday, the children in Class 10 will visit Warlingham School for a morning of fun design and technology events. They will be collected at 8:45 and return by 11:45. Year 1 hearing tests take place on Tuesday and Wednesday. Thank you to those parents who have returned their consent slips for this check.
*On Wednesday, we invite parents and carers of children in Class 3 to join us for their class assembly. This starts at 9:15 in the school hall. We hope you can make it!
*On Thursday 20th June we wish good luck to the children in Years 2-6 who have been selected to participate in the Mini Marathon event at Beaumont. In the evening, we are hosting our welcome meeting for the parents and carers of our new Reception Parents and Carers whose children will be joining our school in September 2019.  This event begins at 6:00pm. Please can we remind parents to bring a copy of their child’s birth certificate on this date.  At this event, parents will be given a welcome pack detailing your child’s class and teacher and further information about transition and induction arrangements. There will be a short talk from the head of the department and an opportunity to visit the classrooms and say hello more informally to the staff.
*On Friday it will be Mufti Day (non-uniform day). The PTA are collecting a £1 donation from each child towards the Summer Fair. We thank you for your support with this fund raising. We are hoping the weather is favourable as our catering firm AIP will be hosting a whole school barbecue event.  The children have chosen their options and are looking forward to tucking in! In assembly on Friday, we are looking forward to welcoming Waggy Tails in to assembly to raise an understanding amongst our children of the work that therapy dogs do in supporting children with additional needs and to support well-being. We wish good luck to our girls’ football team who are taking part in a competition in the afternoon.

We have recently been made aware that there is a clash with our school ‘Music is Magic’ concert and a music concert at Riddlesdown Collegiate. The date for our concert was published on our Important Dates document in July 2018 and unfortunately we have looked at alternative dates but are not able to make a change on this occasion. The concerts will therefore go ahead on the dates that have been advertised (27th June – instrumentalists/solos and 11th July - groups). Mrs Budgen, our Cello teacher, has some spaces from September for children to receive tuition on this instrument. If you are interested, please make contact on Kirsty.budgen@croydon.gov.uk  More detail on individual music tuition can be found at www.croydonmusicandarts.co.uk

Just to give you some advance notice, the Infant and Junior Choirs will be performing at the Summer Fair this year at 1:45. If your child is a member of this group please keep the date and time free! Thank you. Finally, if you have any unwanted largish construction kits, our Early Years Department would love to have it!

Have a great rest of the weekend.

  • Week Beginning 10th June 2019

    Fri 07 Jun 2019

    Coming up this week…

This week children in Year one (and some in Year two) will be taking their phonics screening checks. This is a short assessment that is administered 1:1 with the child and their class teacher and will last approximately 5 minutes. As always, please ensure that your children are in school on time following a good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast. Results of the check will be sent home to parents with your child’s annual reports in July. Please do not worry about this check. Children who do not meet the expected standard will simply be targeted for extra support next year. Year one will complete their check on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday morning and Year 2 retakes will take place on Friday morning. There will be no checks on Thursday.

On Monday we wish good luck to the children in Year 5 who are participating in a Rounders tournament. Good luck team. Be the best you can be!

Our Father’s Day gift room opens on Tuesday 11th where children can choose a gift for their Dads or Grandads or any other important father figure in their lives. Children wishing to participate must have purchased a ticket in advance via the PTA web page or can pay £3 on the door. The event will take place in the Breakfast Club room and will run until the end of the week.

On Wednesday morning we invite parents of children in Safari class to join us for the children’s class assembly. This will take place in the school hall from 9:15. We look forward to seeing you there.

Vision screening checks will take place for our Reception children on the 11th and 12th of June and any concerns identified by the optometrists will be reported directly to parents.

On Wednesday the children in Year 5 and 6 will be visited by the school nursing team for an assembly on the subject of puberty.

Year 5 will also be involved in bread making! Yum!

    Have a wonderful weekend.
