  • Week Beginning 23rd June 2014

    Tue 24 Jun 2014

Well done to Safari Class and Mrs Farr who led their first ever assembly for us this morning.  They looked fantastic dressed as animals, with decorations they painted themselves, and were wonderful at singing their jungle song.  Also, congratulations to all of the children who performed at our Summer Music concert on Wednesday evening.  Thank you also to our amazing team of peripatetic music staff for all of their hard work preparing the children for this event.  I was truly impressed by the range of talent and the high levels of musical ability demonstrated by all of those who performed.

    Week beginning Monday 23rd June

    Coming up next week…

We are delighted to begin the week with a special assembly featuring our recorder and flute players. This is an opportunity for the children to find out more about these instruments and hear the sounds they make. If your child is interested in learning either of these instruments, please speak to the school office as there are still spaces available for the children.  Also on Monday 20 of our Year 5 children will be visiting Warlingham Secondary school and participating in Design and Technology workshops.  Those children attending this event will need a packed lunch on this day.

On Tuesday 24th June there is a mufti day at school where children can bring in filled plastic cups (provided) for the school fair.  The PTA are collecting items for the school fair across the whole of this week- Tuesday cups, Wednesday- biscuits, Thursday-bottles and Friday toys, books, games and plants.  Please see their previous correspondence for more information.

Also on Tuesday our Reception and Year 2 children are looking forward to a visit from an ‘Animal Magic’ an animal handing company who will help the children learn more about animals and where they live through a fun workshop and small group handling sessions.

After school on Tuesday 24th June, there are several events happening.  Class 12 are holding a cake sale in the school hall straight after school to raise money for their chosen charity ‘Shooting Star Chase’, a leading children's hospice charity caring for babies, children and young people with life-limiting conditions, and their families.  Also after school on Tuesday our popular film club will be showing a screening of ‘The Lego Movie’. Children will need to be collected from school promptly at 5pm.  Also our meeting for New Reception children starting at The Hayes in September 2014, will be held in the school hall between 6.30pm - 7.30pm.

On Wednesday morning the Infant children will be having their school sports day at 10.00am (weather permitting).  We aim to finish by 11.45pm.  Please ensure that your child has their correct PE kit in school.  We welcome you to join us for this event.

Also on Wednesday Class 11 are visiting Acorn house.  They will be singing, dancing and playing games with the elderly as the children decided that they should be the beneficiary for their volunteer charity work.  This was as a result of the legacy of the volunteer work started at the London 2012 games.

Our Junior sports day will be held on Thursday afternoon at 1.15pm, weather permitting.  Please do join us to see the children displaying their sporting talent.  After school on Thursday some of our Year 6 children will be taking part in a Rounders’ event at Royal Russell School.

On Friday 27th June Rainforest class will be leading our whole school assembly.  If  your child is in Mrs Sherwood’s class and you do wish to join us for this event please come to the school hall at 10.15am.

Eden will be holding a Barbecue for children at school having school lunches on Friday.  We will have a theme of Brazil to this lunchtime event.

Our School Summer Fair is this Saturday 28th June  between 12.00pm and 3.00pm.  We do hope that you are able to join us and thank you in anticipation to all those hardworking members of the PTA and staff who will be helping at this event. We are still looking for more helpers. If you are able to spare some time to support this event please do let Mrs Doble or one of her team know. Equally if you wish to volunteer to make cakes (small cupcakes or large cakes) for the refreshment stall these would be gratefully received.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your kind donations of items (board games, small world etc.) to our breakfast club; all items have been greatly appreciated.  We will always happily accept any further items you may find, so please do see Mrs McGarry if you would like to know more.  This week in Breakfast club it will be ‘world cup’ week and the children have a host of activities and special food planned for them. We do still have a small number of spaces available for the rest of this term. Collect a pack from the office if this is of interest to you. From Wednesday 25th January, we shall be taking bookings for Breakfast Club for September. This will apply to parents of new Reception Starters.

Also, I would like to note our thanks to some of our parents who have donated an i-pad to a child in our school who has A-T, the genetic disorder ataxia-telangiectasia, we are all extremely grateful for this kind gesture and are sure that this will be a resource that is heavily used and appreciated by the child, family and staff.

Please remember to apply a high factor sun lotion to your child in the mornings during this warm weather.  If it is a swimming day for your child, applying a waterproof sun lotion should be adequate protection for them until they are collected at 3.00pm.

Just to let you know some dates for your diary, on Thursday 3rd July there will be a Soundstart concert at 10:10 am for parents of children in Year 4, who would love to show you their musical talents.  Any other parents of children in Year 3 who would like to find out more about this initiative for next year are also welcome to attend.  Class 3 will lead our assembly on Wednesday 9th July at 2.30pm, parents of children in this class are invited to attend.

Also, if you have any of our ‘visitor’ school lanyards please return these to the school office asap, as we seem to have a greatly depleted stock of these left.

We hope you have an enjoyable weekend.

  • Week Beginning 16th June

    Fri 13 Jun 2014

Thank you to Class 8, Miss Harmen and Mrs Lee for leading a fantastic assembly about The Tudors and Henry VIII this morning.  We all really enjoyed their confident and humorous performance, incorporating superb acting, dancing and singing, well done to them all!

    Week beginning 16th June

    Coming up Next week…

We are delighted that our Breakfast Club opens at The Hayes this week.  We welcome the children that are attending and hope they really enjoy their mornings.  There are still some spaces available, if you would like to reserve a place for your child please ask for a pack of information from the school office.  Prior to the summer holidays we will be sending out a sign up pack for people that may be interested in this facility from September onwards.  This shall also be available to parents of New Reception starters at their New to Reception Evening on Tuesday 24th June.

This week our Year 1 children will be having their phonics screening at school. Please refer to the letter sent from Mrs Olley regarding further information on what this involves.

As part of our healthy schools month, on Monday 16th June our food provider Eden will be leading a Nutri-skill assembly and running workshops throughout the day for the children, to encourage the children to think about making healthy food choices.

Also on Monday we have two cricket teams from Year 4 & 5 playing in matches at Addiscombe cricket club, we wish them the best of luck.

On Tuesday 17th June and Wednesday 18th June there are vision tests in school for our Reception children.

Cliff Harris, our school photographer, will also be in school on Tuesday 17th June taking class photographs.  Please could you ensure your child is wearing the correct full school uniform on this day.

On Wednesday 18th June and Thursday 19th June, The Dogs Trust are visiting the school.  They will hold a series of workshops for all junior classes linked to keeping animals healthy, and lead an assembly for the whole school which will help our children to develop their respect for animals as well as themselves.  They have donated their time to help inspire our children free of charge.  If you are a dog lover and would like to send a donation into school, we will happily pass this on to them during an assembly.  Please pass these to Mrs Meadows or to the school office.

On Wednesday 18th June some children who learn an instrument at school will perform in our Music Summer Concert for their families.  We welcome everyone for a 7pm start in the school hall.  Please would the children involved in this event come into school at 6.40pm.  Those children who are playing the violin with Mrs Aldren need to be in school at 6.15pm for a brief rehearsal.

On Friday Safari Class will be leading our assembly.  If your child is in this class and you wish to join us for this event please join us in the hall at 10.15am.

On Friday afternoon it is our school open afternoon, from 2-3pm. Please do try to come in a look at your children’s learning. They are always keen to share with you and show you what they have achieved. May we politely request that you do not bring buggies or younger siblings to this event as fitting 30 children and 30 parents into our classrooms is a challenge in itself!  During our open afternoon our food provider, Eden, will be doing a taster event for parents in the school hall and this will be a fantastic opportunity for you to ask any questions from Eden staff about school meal provision.

On Saturday 21st June is the PTA Golf day at Farleigh Golf course.

Please could we remind you that the school gates are set on a timer to open automatically at 8.30am.  Please do not drop off your children earlier than this as the office may not be manned and there may be nobody available to open the gates for your child.  We will not be opening the school gates earlier than 8.30am.

Lastly, please do bring your Sainsbury’s vouchers in to school if you have any at home as we will shortly be counting these and looking at what we would like to purchase for the children.  Thank you to those of you who have sent in your BHF jump rope skipping sponsorship money, if you haven’t already, please hand this in to the school office.

Thank you for your ongoing support, we hope you have a lovely weekend.

  • Week beginning 9th June

    Mon 09 Jun 2014

We have had some special events today we would love to share with you. All children attended a special assembly to commemorate the 70th anniversary of D-day.  We were also delighted that Mrs Sylvia McNamara, the Director of Learning and School Improvement and Inclusion at the London Borough of Croydon has visited The Hayes this afternoon and we are pleased to report that she was very impressed with what she saw, commenting on how articulate the children were, how motivated they were by the range of learning opportunities they were engaged in and what a wonderful learning environment we have.

Here are some details about what is coming up next week…

    Week Beginning 9th June

This week is Art week at The Hayes!  We look forward to a week of creative activities, in which the focus will be sculpture and the theme is nature.  During the course of the week all children will work in 3D in some form.  We thank Miss Schoeffer for organising this.

We are so pleased that on Monday our Year 3 and 4 Mini Tennis group have reached the finals, which is to determine the winner and Croydon’s entry to the Summer School Games.  Huge congratulations to them for getting this far in the competition and we wish them all the best of luck.  They will be attending the finals at Purley Bury Tennis club.  If your child is attending they need to be collected from school at 12.30 and from the venue at the end of the tournament, which we estimate should be approx. 3.30pm.

On Tuesday our Year 5/6 girls will be competing in a Kwik Cricket tournament.

On Wednesday our Year 6 Rounders Teams will be competing in an event at Woodcote.

On Thursday our Year 3 children will be visiting Wakehurst gardens for the day.  Please ensure your children are in school promptly on this morning as the coaches leave immediately after registration at 9.00am.  We hope they have an enjoyable day, exploring the gardens and finding out all about plants in special workshops.

On Thursday and Friday there is a ‘Willow Workshop’ at school.  During the course of these two days all children will construct a special structure from willow to take home with them!

Class 8 will be leading our assembly on Friday morning. If your child is in this class and you wish to join us for this event please come into the school hall for a 10:15am start.

We would like to thank Caterham Round table for funding a piece of specialist equipment for a child in our school who has A-T, the genetic disorder ataxia-telangiectasia.  Also a huge well done to the family who have just completed a 9 mile trek from Clapham to Purley with 39 of their friends to raise money for the A-T society.

After popular request, we are delighted to announce that our Breakfast Club will begin on Monday 16th June, offering early morning provision and breakfast from 7.30am.   We will be e-mailing parents information and application packs in the early part of week beginning 9th June.  We are so pleased that it will be run and led by staff who already work at the Hayes and know our children really well, these are Mrs Mc Garry (Breakfast club leader), Mrs Spencer and Mrs Lee (Breakfast club assistants).  We would be extremely grateful for any donations of toys (train track, small world etc.) or board games (e.g. snakes and ladders, puzzles, chess, dominoes) that you may have that you no longer need as we set this up.  If you have any items that you think may be useful please drop them into the school office or to Mrs McGarry. There are a limited number of places available at this club and we expect to be oversubscribed. Places will be allocated on a first come, first serve basis with priority given to those families requiring the service for 5 days a week. We would like to thank the team at Tesco Purley who kindly donated a number of items to get the club up and running including cutlery, toasters, plates and bowls.

Please may we remind you once again that there should be no access during the school day through our school grounds using the gate at the bottom of our field.  Once school has started, if you need to collect your child for any reason please come to the main school office.  If you are seen attempting to leave the premises via this gate you will be approached by staff and asked to leave via the front entrance.  This is for the safety of all children as the bottom gate is on a timer and cannot be closed immediately if required.

Finally, we are in the process of compiling a message/memory book as a retirement gift for Mrs Cook who will be sadly leaving The Hayes at the end of this term. If you or your child would like to submit a message, poem, photo or letter please send this in to the school office on an A4 piece of paper. We are also holding a collection for Mrs Cook to pay towards a leaving gift, namely a Kitchen Aid (she has always wanted one!) If you would like to contribute to this please send your donation into the office in a sealed envelope labelled Mrs Cook’s collection. Your name will then be added to a retirement card along with all other contributories!

Thank you for your ongoing support. Have a good weekend.
