Week beginning 9th June

We have had some special events today we would love to share with you. All children attended a special assembly to commemorate the 70th anniversary of D-day.  We were also delighted that Mrs Sylvia McNamara, the Director of Learning and School Improvement and Inclusion at the London Borough of Croydon has visited The Hayes this afternoon and we are pleased to report that she was very impressed with what she saw, commenting on how articulate the children were, how motivated they were by the range of learning opportunities they were engaged in and what a wonderful learning environment we have.

Here are some details about what is coming up next week…

Week Beginning 9th June

This week is Art week at The Hayes!  We look forward to a week of creative activities, in which the focus will be sculpture and the theme is nature.  During the course of the week all children will work in 3D in some form.  We thank Miss Schoeffer for organising this.

We are so pleased that on Monday our Year 3 and 4 Mini Tennis group have reached the finals, which is to determine the winner and Croydon’s entry to the Summer School Games.  Huge congratulations to them for getting this far in the competition and we wish them all the best of luck.  They will be attending the finals at Purley Bury Tennis club.  If your child is attending they need to be collected from school at 12.30 and from the venue at the end of the tournament, which we estimate should be approx. 3.30pm.

On Tuesday our Year 5/6 girls will be competing in a Kwik Cricket tournament.

On Wednesday our Year 6 Rounders Teams will be competing in an event at Woodcote.

On Thursday our Year 3 children will be visiting Wakehurst gardens for the day.  Please ensure your children are in school promptly on this morning as the coaches leave immediately after registration at 9.00am.  We hope they have an enjoyable day, exploring the gardens and finding out all about plants in special workshops.

On Thursday and Friday there is a ‘Willow Workshop’ at school.  During the course of these two days all children will construct a special structure from willow to take home with them!

Class 8 will be leading our assembly on Friday morning. If your child is in this class and you wish to join us for this event please come into the school hall for a 10:15am start.

We would like to thank Caterham Round table for funding a piece of specialist equipment for a child in our school who has A-T, the genetic disorder ataxia-telangiectasia.  Also a huge well done to the family who have just completed a 9 mile trek from Clapham to Purley with 39 of their friends to raise money for the A-T society.

After popular request, we are delighted to announce that our Breakfast Club will begin on Monday 16th June, offering early morning provision and breakfast from 7.30am.   We will be e-mailing parents information and application packs in the early part of week beginning 9th June.  We are so pleased that it will be run and led by staff who already work at the Hayes and know our children really well, these are Mrs Mc Garry (Breakfast club leader), Mrs Spencer and Mrs Lee (Breakfast club assistants).  We would be extremely grateful for any donations of toys (train track, small world etc.) or board games (e.g. snakes and ladders, puzzles, chess, dominoes) that you may have that you no longer need as we set this up.  If you have any items that you think may be useful please drop them into the school office or to Mrs McGarry. There are a limited number of places available at this club and we expect to be oversubscribed. Places will be allocated on a first come, first serve basis with priority given to those families requiring the service for 5 days a week. We would like to thank the team at Tesco Purley who kindly donated a number of items to get the club up and running including cutlery, toasters, plates and bowls.

Please may we remind you once again that there should be no access during the school day through our school grounds using the gate at the bottom of our field.  Once school has started, if you need to collect your child for any reason please come to the main school office.  If you are seen attempting to leave the premises via this gate you will be approached by staff and asked to leave via the front entrance.  This is for the safety of all children as the bottom gate is on a timer and cannot be closed immediately if required.

Finally, we are in the process of compiling a message/memory book as a retirement gift for Mrs Cook who will be sadly leaving The Hayes at the end of this term. If you or your child would like to submit a message, poem, photo or letter please send this in to the school office on an A4 piece of paper. We are also holding a collection for Mrs Cook to pay towards a leaving gift, namely a Kitchen Aid (she has always wanted one!) If you would like to contribute to this please send your donation into the office in a sealed envelope labelled Mrs Cook’s collection. Your name will then be added to a retirement card along with all other contributories!

Thank you for your ongoing support. Have a good weekend.
