  • Weekly beginning 27th January 2020

    Fri 24 Jan 2020

Well done to our girls’ football team who celebrated a 6-0 win against Kenley last Friday. A great match, well done girls!

Thank you to those parents who have responded to the minibus consultation already. If you have not had a chance to do so, it is still available here: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/YGLJ2FS and will remain open until Monday 27th. There are only 3 questions and we would appreciate your feedback. Thank you.

Also closing soon (29th January) is the Local Authority consultation on the proposed Zebra Crossing outside our school.  We urge as many of you as possible to respond positively to this as we feel that it will improve the safety of children and their families when crossing the road on their way to and from school. There have been several near misses where children have tried to cross the road often in between poorly parked cars or inconsiderate drivers. A crossing could really help to ensure our children’s safety. Email your support to:  Tabrez.hussain@croydon.gov.uk

Next week we are celebrating History week and we are focusing on our local area. On Thursday, we will be thinking about what makes Croydon great. There will be no dress up day this year.

At 9am on Tuesday morning we are hosting a phonics workshop: ‘Fun wiv Fonix’ for parents and carers.  All parents are welcome to attend, particularly those with children in Reception and Year 1. Year 1 children, nationally, will be sitting a phonics screening check in the summer term so parents may find the information useful. Parents of children in Year 2 who did not pass the phonics check last year may also wish to attend. Mrs Farr will be leading this workshop in the school hall, and will be explaining our approaches to teaching phonics.

On Tuesday, there will be a meeting for parents of children in Y5 to discuss the forthcoming visit to Carroty Wood. If your child is attending this visit, please do try to come along as you will learn more about what this residential involves and what your child will need. This will take place at 3:30 in Mrs Boylan’s class.  A member of staff will be available to sit with children in Miss Smith’s classroom while the meeting takes place. If you require this supervision, please ensure that your child is provided with something to entertain themselves such as a book to read or some colouring to do. Thank you.

There is a netball match taking place on Thursday at home against St Aidens. We wish the team the best of luck!

On Friday, our Year 6 children head out on their visit to the Natural History Museum to explore evolution. We are sure they will be excellent ambassadors of The Hayes and enjoy this trip. We will keep you updated on their return journey and their anticipated arrival time home.

On Friday, the PTA are hosting our school dance workshops and discos. Reception children will participate between 2 and 3pm and will attend in their school uniform. They do not require a change of clothes. Year 1 and 2 discos will take place between 3.15 and 4:15 and will also attend straight from school, in uniform. They do not require any money. Year 3 and 4 children will have their disco between 4:30 and 5:30 and the Year 5 and 6 disco will take place between 5:45 and 6:45pm. As they will be going home from school, they may return in their own clothes and may wish to bring some pocket money for snacks (pizza, hot dogs, crisps, drinks), a turn in the photo booth or to purchase some light-up novelty gadgets. The PTA will be sending out further details of this event next week. We thank them for organising this fun event for our children and all the parents who support these events.

There is a Cross Country event coming up on the 29th February which is taking place at Farthing Downs. Parents of children in Year 3 to Year 6 are welcome to attend. This event begins at 10:00am so we recommend a 9:30am arrival at the latest. The children will be expected to run 1 mile in this event.

Lastly, please may we remind parents to supervise your children closely after school. We have noticed children climbing on the green fences at the front of the school which is causing damage. Additionally, we have received reports from neighbours of children pulling leaves off plants and throwing rubbish into their gardens. Please ensure that it is not your child behaving in this way. Thank you.

    Have a lovely weekend.

    Week Beginning 20th January 2019

We are in the process of considering purchasing a school minibus to transport our children to and from school visits including sporting events, music rehearsals and trips. We are seeking the views of parents and carers and would appreciate it if you could give two minutes of your time to respond to this very short (3 questions only) opinion poll.  https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/YGLJ2FS

    Coming up next week…

On Monday morning we are hosting the Year 6 coffee morning and Tuesday will be the Year 5 coffee morning. Both events will take place in the hall at 9:00. Please do come along and find out more about what your child will be learning at school this term.

On Thursday, the Hayes Netball team have an away match against Margaret Roper and we wish them all the best of luck.

Please note that a new version of the important dates document has been sent to parents today with some slight amendments. Please make note of the changes in your diary. Thank you.

Please can we remind parents to ensure that their children are wearing the correct school uniform each day. If you are unsure of the requirements, these can be found on the school website. This includes not wearing nail varnish. Additionally, we have had some cases of head lice in school. Please check your children carefully and ensure that long hair (boys and girls) is tied up to prevent this spreading further.

Please may we remind parents who have not yet made swimming donations to consider doing so. There are significant costs to running a school pool which we are not able to cover without parent contributions. We thank you for your support with this and thank those of you who have made your donation already.

    Have a lovely weekend.

    Week Beginning 13th January

Welcome back and Happy New Year! We hope you all had a lovely break and that your children have enjoyed their first few days back at school. We are excited for the New Year and all the fun things we have planned between now and summer.

It has been wonderful to hear all about the children’s holidays and many of the children have been keen to tell us about and, in some instances, show us some of their lovely Christmas gifts. Please can we remind parents to keep expensive items or toys at home. For example, expensive smart phones, Apple watches and similar items are at risk of being lost or broken and, for our older children who walk home alone, make them a target for being mugged. Please make sure these items are kept safely at home for children to enjoy.  Items that are brought into school are done so at the children’s own risk and the school will not be held responsible for any loss or damage incurred. Thank you.

We start the year with exciting news that will benefit all of our children. The Council are proposing the installation of a zebra crossing on the raised area outside 131 Hayes Lane (opposite the school) primarily to assist our children travelling safely to and from school. There is a consultation in place for which the LA are seeking the views of local residents prior to the 29th January. Please can we urge you to respond positively to this consultation supporting this installation to inform the Executive Director of Place who will make a decision as to whether or not the proposal should go ahead. Further information on this crossing and the consultation details have been emailed to you already.

Thursday 16th is our school census day and the number of children having a school meal determines a large part of our funding for the remainder of the year. As such, we have a special census day menu of children’s favourites and encourage as many children as possible to have a school lunch on Thursday. Thank you for your support with this.

On Monday, Lexia club restarts so if your child has been invited to attend we look forward to seeing them in at 8:30 in the computing suite on their allocated day. We are hosting our termly coffee mornings next week in the hall at 9:00am so please do come along to your year group meetings on the following days to find out what your child will be learning this term:

    Monday: Reception

    Tuesday: Year 2

    Wednesday: Year 1

    Thursday: Year 3

    Friday: Year 4

Year 6 and 5 will take place the following week on Monday 20th and Tuesday 21st respectively.

Choir will resume next week with Infants (Year 1 and Year 2) on Monday after school and Juniors on a Tuesday (Years 4-6). This is for children who are participating in the CSMA (Croydon Schools Music Association) concerts taking place in March (Infants 17th and Juniors 16th). These concerts take place at the Fairfield Halls and rehearsals for these require full commitment at the club and at the area rehearsals (letter to follow). Auditions will be held during the club day if numbers interested exceed 25 which is the limit set by the CSMA. Please note that children in Year 1 and 2 are permitted to be in the CSMA choir (CSMA rules due to the difficulty of the music) and children in Year 5 and 6 are permitted in the first instance. Children in Year 4 are welcome to come to the rehearsal on Tuesday but may need to be auditioned if numbers exceed 25.

Boosters for KS2 also resume next week.

Please may we remind parents that swimming lessons are an important part of our school curriculum which is not an optional extra. Children who attend school without a kit will be provided with a clean spare kit to use to enable their participation. Children who are persistently not swimming due to medical reasons are required to obtain medical evidence in the form of a letter from their GP which explicitly states they are too unwell to swim. We thank you in supporting this important essential life skill. We are extremely fortunate to have our own pool and proud to be able to offer the opportunity to swim, to every child, each week.

If your child is going to be absent from school due to ill health, please can we remind parents to call the office before 9am.

A note from our PTA. On Friday 31st January we have our PTA fun afternoon and discos. Please note we have had to change the original date. Reception: in-school fun dance workshop from 2pm-3pm for all children to take part and enjoy. Year 1-6: disco tickets (after school) will go on sale on Monday 13th at 10am, please follow this link to access the website to purchase tickets: www.pta-events.co.uk/thehayes

A letter will be sent home from the PTA on Monday with more information.

We hope you have a wonderful weekend.
