    Week Beginning 3rd November 2014

The end of the first half term has arrived during which the children have worked exceptionally hard. We hope you have a fun and restful half term break planned. School reopens on Monday 3rd November. Here’s what is coming up…

Bikeability starts during half term for those children who have booked themselves a place.  On Monday 27th October children in Years 5/6 need to ensure that they arrive and make their way into the playground at 9.30am for the morning session and 12pm for the afternoon session.   Year 3 and 4 children taking part should arrive for the morning session at either 9.30am on either Thursday or Friday (depending on their booking) and 12.30pm for the Friday afternoon session.  These sessions will take place in the school playground.  If you have any questions please contact Jo Doble (hayespta@sky.com).

    After half term…..

Tuesday 4th November is the deadline for sending in your filled shoeboxes to support the Link to Hope Appeal.   If you are willing and able to offer your support by making a shoebox with your child we will be very grateful and thank you in anticipation of your kindness and generosity.  As mentioned before we are aiming to collect a minimum of 80 boxes.

    The Poppy Appeal

Also on Tuesday 4th November a group of Year 5 girls will be selling poppy charms and poppy loom bracelets to raise money for The Poppy Appeal. Charms will cost £1 and bracelets £1.50. We also have a range of official Poppies in school which we will be offering for a small donation.

On Thursday 6th  November our football team are playing a match against Kenley we wish them the best of luck.

At 1.00pm on Friday 7th November we are holding an afternoon tea for all of our parents that currently help with swimming.  If you do help with swimming you are warmly invited to attend.  Please do come along to have tea and cake and you can also find out a little more about how to support the children with changing for swimming.  Please note the change of venue, this will now be held in our breakfast club room.

Just a reminder to all parents that if your child is swimming first thing in the morning they must be in school at 8.45am in order to be in the pool by 9am ready for their lesson.  It is vital that they arrive in school on time, as if they arrive late this can impact not only on their lesson, but also on the other swimming lessons that happen during the course of the morning.

    Key Stage Two Shop

With the financial support of the PTA, Ms Spinks and Class 10 have decided to offer a new service to the children in KS2. From Tuesday 4th November a school shop will run twice a week, offering the opportunity for children to purchase stationery resources that they may need in school. It will be situated in the corridor outside Classes 5 and 6 and will be open between 8.45am and 9.00am so that it does not impact on learning. We believe the first few weeks are likely to be very busy and we will therefore operate the following timetable for visiting the shop:

    Tuesdays (8.45-9.00) Children from Classes 5, 7, 10, 11

    Friday (8.45-9.00) Children from Classes 6, 8, 9, 12

Prices range from 40p for an eraser to £2.20 for a dragon pen.

November is our Anti bullying month and the National theme this year is ‘Let’s stop bullying together.’ Your children will be taking part in a number of activities looking at friendship and how they can be great friends to one another.  We will be holding our special anti bullying week from 17th November.

    Week Beginning 13th October 2014

We start the week with our special Harvest assembly led by Mrs Spinks’ class.  If your child is in Class 10 and you would like to join us, the assembly will start at 9.15am on Monday 13th October.   We are sorry that we cannot accommodate any more parents at this event due to limited space in the hall.

We would like to thank you all for your very generous harvest donations! We will be delighted to present boxes of goods to The Purley Food hub that helps people in crisis in Croydon.  Your kindness will no doubt be much appreciated by many in need especially during the cold winter months that lie ahead!  If you have forgotten to bring a donation and still wish to bring something along to school, please do so on Monday 13th October.

Also on Monday our football team are playing a match against Kenley primary school here at The Hayes after school.  We wish them all the very best of luck.

As our Year 6 parents know, on Wednesday 15th October Year 6 have a special Viking day in school.  They will be visited by a Viking, Thorulf Hammrson, from ‘portals to the past.’ They will learn all about life as a Viking, their weapons, armour and invasion through games, fun activities and even a battle re-enactment!  If your child is in Year 6 and wishes to dress up for this event there are simple costume ideas on Fronter.  I’m sure they will have a fantastic day, experiencing more about life long ago through first-hand experience!  Thank you for your donations towards this fantastic day.

On Thursday 16th October and Friday 17th October members of the PTA will be working with the children across the school to design their Christmas cards for this year.  We thank them for their hard work in supporting the school.

Also on Thursday our Year 3/4 children are taking part in their cross country finals at Lloyd park after school.  We wish them all the best of luck and thank Mr Blundell for his hard work in organising such a super range of sports activities for the children.  Please refer to your earlier letter from Mr Blundell with details about collection for this event.

This week we begin the tours of The Hayes for prospective parents of Reception starters 2015.  This year we will be involving groups of children in a virtual tour using our new ipads, which sounds like an ingenious way to find out all about life at The Hayes.

On Friday 17th October Class 5 will be leading our whole school assembly .  If you have a child in Mrs Taylors class please do join us in the hall at 10.15am.  We are really looking forward to seeing their performance.

Also on Friday our tag rugby team will be participating in an event at Old Whitgiftian’s Rugby club during the afternoon.  We wish them all the best and hope they enjoy their afternoon.

After school on Friday our drama club will begin at 3.15-4.00.  The first two sessions are taster sessions to see if your child enjoys themselves, however after the half term we require full attendance as parts will be allocated for their first performance.

May we remind you that as we are a healthy school, all Key Stage 2 children are allowed to bring in a piece of fruit each day as a mid-morning snack or they may purchase a healthy snack from Eden at a cost of £0.50.   The children in FS and KS1 do get fruit provided each day.    May we remind you that the KS2 children should NOT be bringing in cereal bars or such like, it is only a piece of fruit or a vegatable from home that is acceptable.  If your child would like to bring in a full water bottle to drink in class they may do so but please ensure that this has a ‘sports cap’ top so spillages over children’s work are reduced!  Thank you for your co-operation.

    Week Beginning 6th October 2014

Today our newly elected school council members have met for the first time. We congratulate all those who have been elected to represent their class and give a special congratulations to our new Chair Georgia Goddard, Secretary Melissa Prouten and Treasurer Arya Labroo. Well done!

    Coming up next week…

On Monday evening we are hosting our ‘How we learn in Reception’ meeting for all parents of children currently in Rainforest or Safari classes.   This will take place at 6.30pm in the hall and afterwards you will have the opportunity to visit the Reception classrooms and see how they are set up for learning.  This is a fantastic opportunity to find out more about the Early Years curriculum, how the children access learning in the foundation stage and the type of activities they may be engaging in.  You will get a clearer understanding of how the children learn at school, what to expect over the course of the next year and ways in which you can support your child at home.

On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday the PTA are running the travelling book fair ‘READiscover’ that is coming to school.  They will be set up in the ICT suite from 2.45pm.  Please do go along to support this event after collecting your children at the end of the day, as this has an impact on books that we can gain for school.

On Wednesday 8th October our Year 5/6 children will be taking part in the Croydon Cross Country finals at Lloyd park.  We wish them all the best of luck.

On Thursday 9th October our Junior Choir will start.  This is a lunchtime club for the children in Year3-6, and will provide them with the opportunity to support the Christmas production in school and to perform locally at residential homes in the area.

On Thursday 9th October the PTA are holding their Junior discos.  The Year 3&4 disco is between 5.00-6.00pm, and Year 5&6 between 6.15-7.45pm.  Your last opportunity to purchase tickets for this event, priced at £3.50 each, will be on Wednesday 8th October.   If you are willing to volunteer to help on the night please add your name to the volunteers register at www.pta-events.co.uk/thehayes .

Please don’t forget that the school is CLOSED on Friday 10th October.  The school will only be open to staff as it is an INSET day.

If you have a child who is due to start school in Reception in September 2014, we are now taking bookings for appointments for visits to the school.  Please telephone the school office if you would like an appointment to have a tour of the school and to be welcomed to The Hayes by Mrs Larkham the Headteacher.

We do hope that you have a wonderful weekend.
