  • Week ending Friday 23rd October 2020

    Fri 23 Oct 2020

We have reached October half term break – well done to everyone in what we know has been unprecedented times. However, when working together in partnership, something far easier to get through- together. Thank you, as always for your support and for supporting our staff who face a very different day, every day.

Please remember that we are now Tier 2 and therefore need to be very aware of these rules- I wrote about them in my previous bulletin. Please stay safe, particularly as we move into the October half term break and if you are intending on taking part in Halloween. Please remember: do not meet people socially anywhere indoors (unless in your household/support bubble), only meet people outdoors in groups of up to six and wash hands, cover face and make space. Please take care.

Cross Country: this week, Croydon Schools Sports Partnership (CSSP), alongside The Hayes, organised a cross country event for our children in KS2. The event formed part of an inter-house competition so the aim was for children to earn points for their team. We saw some fantastic running talent and many children persevered to finish the course. It was also a great way for the children to get some exercise and fresh air. Well done to Lawrence House who finished as overall winners. Last Friday, they were awarded the House Cup in our virtual assembly! Well done all. Children in KS1 and EYFS, we look forward to your cross country event after half term!

Drum Lessons: if you would like your child to learn to play the drum kit, we have spaces. If you are interested, please contact the school office for more details.

Our One Way System: still exists even if the signs have blown away. These will go up again after October half term break to remind everyone. Thank you to the many of you who walk around the playground and leave the school via the gate by the swimming pool gate. Please do not leave the school via the front gate – the way you entered the school because parents are likely to be walking towards you. We must continue to keep a distance and remain safe. Thank you.

Ventilation: when dealing with an airborne virus, ventilation is the key. Therefore, alongside our hygiene regimes, with handwashing, sanitising, face coverings, etc, we also must keep all rooms ventilated. We therefore need to open windows to ensure there is a flow of air. We cannot allow rooms to get stuffy. Current guidance is to maximise the outdoor air as much as reasonably possible but without giving children or staff pneumonia. So! Please do make sure your child has a school sweatshirt school jumper so s/he does not get cold. Additionally, we don’t need to open all windows, but each classroom must be well ventilated.

A Message from our All Saints Church, Kenley: we are hosting a Thanksgiving and Remembrance service for loved ones who have died at 3pm on 1st November.  This will be in church at All Saints Kenley (strictly limited places which must be booked in advance) and also via zoom, where all are welcome. Coping with a loss can be a lonely and bewildering experience; although grief is a very personal thing it can sometimes be helpful to meet with others who are in a similar situation. The service will be held at All Saints’ Church, Kenley on Sunday 1st November at 3pm, with places for up to 30 people.  Places must be booked in advance and a separate space should be booked for each attendee (up to four people from the same bubble).
Please book your places via this link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/thanksgiving-remembrance-service-for-loved-ones-all-saints-church-kenley-tickets-125402986709
If you do not feel able to come to the church building, the service will also be live-streamed via Zoom.  The link and log in details are as follows: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86795262212?pwd=VkI2amJJcUFPa0wwM0Facm1NK0xpUT09

    News from the office

School Photographs: The school photographer will be here on Monday 16th November to take individual and sibling photographs. The company’s risk assessment passes our expectations and we are more than satisfied that photos will be taken with the correct distance. Please let the school office know you if you not want your child(ren) to have their photo taken.

School Uniform: We know parents have struggled to source Marks and Spencer logo uniform in the last few weeks. The uniform is now back in stock and will be available to purchase through their website later this week. https://www.mandsyourschooluniform.com//m-s-uniform/uniform-by-school/surrey/the-hayes-primary-school/5637147002.c

Sal's Shoes: Collection of outgrown shoes for the charity Sal’s Shoes has been suspended via the donation box located in the infant entrance. However, you can still donate your shoes by post. Please click on the link https://www.salsshoes.com/send-us-your-shoes-1

Birthdays: The Hayes take an active role in promoting, supporting, and modeling healthy eating habits for our children. We recognise that our children love to celebrate special events such as birthdays, however we would like to request that they do so without making food the focus of our celebrations. We would therefore kindly request that children no longer distribute edible treats. Instead, we would ask that parents donate a book to the class book corners which will be labelled with the child’s name and birthday for all the class to share and enjoy.

Attendance: If your child is unable to attend school, due to illness, please can we kindly request that your call/email the office before 9am. Thank you.

Nasal Flu: If you wish for your child to receive the Nasal flu vaccination on Thursday 19th November, please return your form no later than 2nd November and place it in the red postbox at the entrance to the school office.

Below, we are pleased to announce our achievement awards for this week:

Coronavirus Update: as I am sure you are more than aware; more areas of England are to move to 'high risk' Tier 2 lockdown restrictions from 12:01am, on Friday. This affects The Borough of London (Kenley, Croydon, etc) and in Surrey, Elmbridge. This is because of an increase in infections.
What does this mean for me?
    Meeting Friends and Family
*You must not meet people you don't live with in any indoor setting - whether at home or, for example, a pub or restaurant - unless they are part of your support or childcare bubble.
*You may continue to mix with people outdoors (including in a garden or a park) but you must not meet in a group more than six, and you must follow social distancing rules.
*Meeting in larger groups is against the law, and you can be fined up to £6,400.
    Schools
*Schools and nurseries remain open. In schools and colleges that teach Year 7 and above, face coverings should be worn by adults and pupils when moving around the premises, but not usually in a classroom.

*Pubs, bars and restaurants are restricted to table service only and must close at 22:00 BST.
*Customers should not mix indoors with anyone from outside their own household or support bubble. *Outdoors, you can meet in groups of up to six people.

*Face coverings must be worn, except when seated to eat or drink.
    Shopping
*You must wear a face covering in shops, supermarkets and shopping centres.
    Other
*If you need to travel, you should aim to reduce the number of journeys you make where possible and you are encouraged to walk or cycle, rather than use public transport.

*Up to 30 people can attend a funeral. Wakes and other related events are restricted to 15 people.
*You should not visit a care home except in exceptional circumstances, for example to visit an individual who is at the end of their life.
Restrictions review: the PM has said that restrictions will be in place for the fortnight and will then be reviewed.

    Swimming
We are pleased to announce that the school swimming will be starting up again as from week commencing 2nd November 2020. We are having to make some changes in order for this activity to work safely for us all, in this respect, swimming for your child will take place every other week. The reason for this is because the changing rooms need to be cleaned in between each session, adhering to the current rules and regulations. The good news is that each lesson has been increased to 40 minutes, with each class split into two groups.   A longer session will benefit the pupils, allowing the teacher to focus more on the children’s strokes and confidence in the water.
Below is a time table of when each class will be swimming, please ensure your child/ren have their swimming kit in school on this day:

  • Week ending 9th October 2020

    Fri 09 Oct 2020

Tomorrow is World Mental Health Day and today we came together, wearing yellow to support our mental health #HelloYellow. The mental health and wellbeing of our children, staff and yourself is incredibly important. We all need something to look forward to, to feel positive about the future. Today in our virtual assembly (filmed live in Class 11 and streamed to all classes), we had a focus on our mental health and to show everyone that we’re not alone- we are here for each other.

We also spoke about who we could talk to if we needed to and what we can do for our well-being. It is ok to sometimes feel ‘not ok’. We discussed that it is important to share a problem with an adult or a friend, but adults sometimes can help more. Class 11 decided that sharing a problem is better and that there are many ways to look after our mental health:

    1)            Talking about your feelings

    2)            Keeping active - exercise

    3)            Eating well – healthy food

    4)            Drinking water and sleeping well – don’t go to bed late

    5)            Keeping in touch with your friends and family when you can

    6)            Asking for help if you need it

    7)            Taking a break – could be a five-minute pause, could be to explore               somewhere new with your family, could be to play with friends but we all need ‘me time’.

    8)            Do something you are good at or you enjoy.

    9)            Care for others

    10)          Accept who you are – you are good enough.

Let’s be kind to each other and make the world a kinder place. At a time when it’s needed most, we all need to come together to support people’s mental well being on World Mental Health Day and beyond.

Achievement Certificates- well done to all below children whose names were read out in our virtual assembly today:

Rainforest: Roman - for growing in confidence and coming in to school independently. For also being kind and caring towards his new friends.

Safari: Kieran- for settling into school so well and for always being such a kind and helpful friend.

Class 1: Skylar- for her improved handwriting and presentation. Super effort Skylar!

Class 2: Rocco- for using his phonics independently to write about Stick man.

Class 3: Joshua- for making incredible progress with his phonics.

Class 4: Sunaya- for having an excellent attitude towards her learning and showing great progress in maths this week.

Class 5: Oliver- for working so hard to learn extra spellings and scoring full marks in our weekly spelling tests.

Class 6: Aimee- for her continued effort in maths, impressing Mrs Piamya with the challenges she is able to complete.

Class 7: Silah- for his wonderful use of alliteration and prepositional phrases in his Varjak Paw poem.

Class 8: Finley- for using excellent figurative language in his poem.

Class 9: Theo- for working really hard with all of his work this week.

Class 11: Divine- for showing responsibility for her learning and thinking of ways to help others.

Class 12: Nesrin for persevering through a maths problem, despite finding it really tricky.

Well done all! Elbow bumps to all of you!

Tuesday 13th October: we were having a KS1 Cross Country day on this day, we are afraid it is going to be postponed due to a booking of a 360° virtual tour for our 2021 EYFS parents. Ordinarily, we would be touring our parents around the school and giving a presentation about what The Hayes has to offer, however, this cannot now be the case, sadly. Please watch out for a 360° tour on our website though! On this day (Tuesday), please can all children come to school in their smart school uniform (unless they are having their usual, scheduled PE lesson). We are currently finding another date for the Cross Country day. Thank you.

A message from our PTA: Hi everyone, we hope you are all well and the children have settled back into school life and happy to be back with their friends.

As I am sure you are all aware, the PTA's job to fundraise for the school has now become very difficult due to Covid 19 Rules and Regulations, but it is not impossible and I wanted to let you know that the committee is still as dedicated as ever and we won't let anything stand in our way of raising funds for the school and our children. However, it is more of a challenge and many of our regular events can no longer take place for the foreseeable future - we are busy behind the scenes trying to think of new ideas.

Over the years we have always been very successful at raising money for our school. This is down to the fantastic PTA team and all of you. It's a team effort and we all do it for the children.  As a result, we do have a healthy sum of money in our account that we plan to put to good use.  The biggest upcoming purchase is to buy new ipads and laptops for school.  Unfortunately, the money will dwindle and we need to be mindful of this and raise funds where we can. We do have a few ideas that will be shared in the forthcoming PTA newsletter.

We know that our Xmas Fair and Breakfast with Santa will be very much missed this year, but it is our aim to keep Christmas alive for the children and we will do everything we can to make sure this special time for many is still fun and exciting.

Finally, I would like to remind you that anyone is welcome to join the PTA – including our new Reception parents. Please email danniharrington1@gmail.com if you are interested.  We welcome new faces and fresh ideas with open arms.  We also have a group called FOTH (Friends of the Hayes) If you don't have the time to be a PTA member but would like to help out occasionally you can join. Please email at the same address if you would like to become a member of FOTH.

Please follow our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/thehayespta to keep up to date with all the fund-raising events and our events website: www.pta-events.co.uk/thehayes Finally a reminder about second hand uniforms- if you wish to purchase or donate, please email uniformrequest2@gmail.com

    Kind regards

Danni Harrington and The PTA Team

    News from the office

Please can we politely remind your to clear your balance on your Wraparound Care account.

When you are collecting your child/ren at the end of the day, please do not allow them to play on the tyres adjacent to the swimming pool and climb on the outside wall. Thank you

That just leaves us to say, have a fantastic weekend and see you all next week! Stay safe!

  • Week ending 2nd October 2020

    Fri 02 Oct 2020

It has been a great week of activity, with new and exciting displays going up in the corridors and classrooms exhibiting our children’s work. One in particular is stunning – a whole school paper chain, where each child has written a kind comment on each link, for example: colour your world with kindness; respect everybody; be kind.  When the displays are complete, we will take photos of them so you can see them in their glory. They will be published on the school website.

*Well done and thank you to all who gave a donation of £1 for jeans for genes day, we collected a massive £179 which will go towards this fabulous charity.

*If your child would like to learn to play the violin with Mrs Aldren or cello with Mrs Budgen, please contact the school office.

*If your child is poorly, s/he will not be given work to do at home. However, if your child has to self-isolate due to a family member/close contact having symptoms COVID related, they will be set home

    learning to be completed.
*Year 6 parents: a reminder that applications for Secondary School 2021 closes on the 31st October:
    https://www.thehayesprimaryschool.co.uk/admissions/

We hope the below may answer some of the questions we have received this week….

Please be assured, if a member of staff or child has symptoms of COVID-19 (a high temperature, a new, continuous cough and a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste), The Hayes will do the following:
*immediately self-isolate the pupil and any siblings on school premises until taken home by parent or carer (in our medical room).
    *send staff member home.

*ask parent/carer to book a COVID-19 test for the child.
*send member of staff home with a test (while we have them in stock- we only have enough for staff unfortunately due to the member of staff needing to come back to school quickly (if test is negative) to keep the school running).
*if parent/carer cannot book a COVID-19 test in the NHS test and trace website because of system capacity issues, child should be advised to self-isolate for 10 days and all other household members should self-isolate for 14 days. Parent/carer should be encouraged to continue trying to book a COVID-19 test.
*Only those with symptoms or those advised by their clinician or Local Authority should get a test.
*Those with symptoms such as runny nose, sore throat without a fever or headache should not book a test.
*If there is a confirmed case then we would not direct entire classes or year groups to get tested unless the Local Authority advised us to once we have reported the case.
*If there is a confirmed case, with the support of LCRC (London Coronavirus Response Centre) or DfE, we would identify the contacts and then ensure they are sent home to self-isolate for 14 days.
*The parents of the confirmed case would need to contact schools of siblings.

Reporting if there is a positive case of COVID-19 at our school:
    - for all positive cases, we will contact the Director of Education, Director of Public Health and our link adviser, who will liaise with public health colleagues to support us and advise us what to do next (for example: closing a class bubble, closing a year group bubble, etc).

    - if we have one positive case, we will also have to contact the DfE Helpline.

    - if we have 2 or more positive cases, we will contact immediately the LCRC (London Coronavirus Response Centre).

    - please note, we have to communicate with the above contacts if we have a positive case because we will liaise with each other regarding next steps.

    - schools do not make the decisions if there is a positive case, the other contacts do.

    - we will send a template letter (given by the Local Authority) to identified contacts/parents and carers. The letter will not identify individuals.

If a member of staff is sent home with an illness or a child – please do not automatically assume that they have COVID-19. If after a test, we discover they are positive, you will be contacted as soon as we have liaised with the above contacts. You will always be informed. Please also remember, if your child has come home to tell you that their friend has been sent home with COVID-19, this is likely to not be the case. At present, we have not had a single confirmed case. We hope that this alleviates any fears.

Achievement Certificates- well done to all below children whose names were read out in our virtual assembly today:

Rainforest: Gabriella, for always being kind and caring to her new friends. Well done for an amazing start to your school life at The Hayes!
