HARVEST FESTIVAL is coming! We will shortly be celebrating the Harvest in school and, from next week, we shall be collecting donations of non-perishable food items and toiletries that we will use in our assembly before we donate to Purley Food Hub to support our local community. With the current cost of living crisis, more and more families are relying on food banks. If you are in a fortunate enough position to be able to help, we thank you enormously for your kindness and generosity. Items can be placed in a collection box that will be located at the main gate at the front of the school.
What are we learning? We continue to invite parents and carers into school for our Year group meetings to outline ‘What We Are Learning’ this term. If you wish to join us in the school hall, meetings will start at 9am and will be held on the following days: Monday 26th – Year 2 Tuesday 27th – Year 3 Wednesday 28th – Year 4 Meetings will continue for other year groups the following week, they will last no longer than 1 hour. For those parents who are unable to make the meeting, we will post year group presentations on the school website, please click here. School Uniform: please can we remind parents to ensure the children’s uniform and personal items are named. This way, lost items can be returned. Please also periodically check your children’s belongings in case they have accidently brought home somebody else’s things.
CMA: lastly, Croydon Music and Arts (CMA) have some new opportunities for children in Key Stage 2, including free workshops for anyone in receipt of pupil premium funding. Please see information below:
Local Library Classes Croydon Music and Arts is launching some new classes in local libraries (New Addington, Purley and Thornton Heath), aimed at introducing KS2 pupils to a range of different musical instruments and performing arts. Classes are great value (£34/term) with discounts for Pupil Premium and Free School Meals pupils. The CMA Voyagers sessions are completely FREE for children on your Pupil Premium register and we would love it if you could promote these classes to the relevant parents and carers. The sessions are a fun, interactive, varied and engaging way for individuals to discover their interests and talents. The course culminates in a performance to families. Further information including dates and times can be found on our website, click here.
Endangered Species Open Morning: on 8th October we will be holding our Endangered Species open day as part of our Saturday morning centre. This class is aimed at encouraging children to try out less-commonly played instruments such as the double bass, bassoon and French horn. Please click here for more information. PTA School Disco: is on Friday 30th September. Tickets are still available if you would like to purchase any, please go to this link. As the website states, the infant disco (Years 1 and 2) is from 3:30pm-4:30pm and the PTA will collect the children from the classrooms and take them directly to the hall at 3:15pm. Children not going will be collected as usual, from the class teacher. Please note, children can bring their clothes to school (Years 1 and 2) on the Friday to change for the disco at the end of the afternoon (in class). For the price of the ticket, children will enjoy a disco and entertainment and will be provided with a snack and a drink. Collection: from 4:30pm, parents are to collect their child from the hall large doors. The car park gate will be left open to enable this.

    Week beginning 19th September 2022
    Teacher Assistants’ Day:
today is a day for our Teaching Assistants. Classroom support staff deserve to be celebrated, so today we showed our appreciation for our TAs in assembly with a certificate and cupcakes! #NationalTADay. National Teaching Assistants’ Day is an awareness day to celebrate our own TAs, our TAs go the extra mile, no matter how hard things get, and they put pupils first. The Hayes TAs – you are fab, thank you for all you do!

Bank holiday, Monday 19th September: as you know, Monday is a Bank holiday for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s State Funeral. Therefore, school will be closed. If your child is struggling to come to terms with this or experience any other form of grief, please reach out to us so we can offer support.

Message from the office: please remember water bottles, it is important to keep hydrated and children are forgetting theirs. Additionally, please contact the office in emergencies only for change of pick-ups. All other pre-arranged pick-ups can be sent on a note to the class teacher on the day. Finally, please remember to label all clothing and lunchboxes. This week we have been inundated with piles of lost property that have had no names. A table will be out by the reception classrooms (under the shelter), every Friday. Many thanks!

Parking: we have had a number of emails from parents about parking in Cedar Walks exit. This week, a silver BMW parked and blocked the exit, making a neighbour to have to drive on the wrong side of the road to get passed. Please remember, that parking this way is dangerous and can result in a serious accident. This time, the neighbour did not call the Police to give the registration number. Next time, they will do.

Music Lessons: this week, our new violin teacher came to visit KS2’s singing assembly to demonstrate the violin which is available to learn for children in Year 2-Year 6. We also have the clarinet, flute, trumpet, drum kit, trombone and piano if you would like your child to take part in lessons. All lessons can be booked and paid for via the Croydon Music Association website. Please click here.

Christmas Performances: as you know from our Important Dates, our Reception Nativity is on the 7th December and the Year 6 musical (with the KS2 choir), is on 14th December. Year 2 will do a musical in the summer term, date to be announced. This will continue year on year, where year groups will perform a musical or performance at the end of each Key Stage (EYFS, Year 2 and Year 6). Christmas is a busy and exciting time of the year, with the hall being used for PE, rehearsals, school and PTA events, etc. Timetabling this is difficult which is why we have decided for Year 2 to perform in the summer (to be announced) and to revert back to end of Key Stage performances. We also look forward to class assemblies in the hall (all invited) which will start soon and throughout the year – dates to come.

Recruitment: please click here to see further information on teaching and support staff vacancies at our lovely school. Please feel free to share this link with anyone you know with suitable experience and qualifications. Thank you.

Jeans for Genes Day: is on Friday 23rd September, for a £1 donation your child can come to school wearing jeans (everything else needs to be normal school uniform). The event is to raise money to make a difference for children affected by genetic conditions. If your child’s class has PE, they can still wear their jeans. The children will have a special assembly on Friday to learn more about this.

‘What are we learning?’ on Friday, we start our ‘What are we learning?’ meetings. Year 1 teachers will be meeting parents in the hall, to start at 9.15am.

Whats App: reception parents have externally organised a class group with the aim to liaise with each other. A reminder to all, that this is not organised by the school. However, if any reception parents would like to be part of this group and are not currently involved, please see your child’s class teacher who will pass on your details to the organisers.

Black History Month: if there are any parents or family members who would like to come into school to share in an aspect of their culture with the children in school, please let the office know. This might be telling traditional tales, cooking, dance, etc. We would love to hear from you!

    Fri 09 Sep 2022

Welcome back to one and all and a special welcome to all of our new children and families in Reception and across the school.  We hope your children have had a great start to the school year and that they have settled quickly with their new class teachers. From Monday, the children will all be in school full time including our Early Years pupils.

It is with much sadness that yesterday, we learned about the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. This morning we had a full assembly to celebrate her life and the amazing impact that she has had on our nation in her time as Queen. We will contact you as soon as we know the Local Authority’s plans for schools regarding any further actions.

Start of the day: we would like to start this week’s bulletin by clarifying the reasons behind the change of coming into school in the mornings. Following the disruption caused by COVID, the government have instructed all schools to ensure that children are in school for a minimum of 32.5 hours each week. To ensure that this takes place at The Hayes we can no longer offer a staggered start. Children must be in school from 8:45 until 3:15 each day. This maximises the learning opportunities available to them and ensures that all children have a full and exciting day of learning with lessons starting promptly as soon as all children are through the classroom door. Miss Slade has written a letter regarding this which will be emailed later this weekend.

Free School Meals: please can we ask all parents and carers to check their eligibility for free school meals using the following link Free School Meal Eligibility Checker (lgfl.org.uk). Even if your child is in Reception, Year 1 or Year 2, where they are eligible for universal free school meals, please use the checker as if they are eligible, this will generate additional funding (Pupil Premium Grant) for your child which can be used in school to support their learning.

Learning: you will soon receive a class letter about arrangements for your child’s year group. This will outline which days swimming and PE will take place and let you know what the children will be learning in each subject this term.

Disco: ticket sales are now live! Please click here.

Emails: during COVID to ensure teachers were contactable during school closures, class teacher email addresses were shared. This year, we shall no longer be using direct emails to teachers as a form of communication. This decision has been made because teachers cannot respond quickly due to their teaching commitments and we do not want important messages to get missed, which was a development area in our parent/carer questionnaire which will be shared with you, asap. Additionally, we can now meet face to face which is far better!

Mural: we are still collecting plastic bottle lids for the art work project – blue only please! Thank you.

National Teaching Assistant Day: on Friday next week, we celebrate National Teaching Assistant Day where we acknowledge the tremendous contribution our support staff team make. We are so lucky to have such a committed and hard working team of people who work tirelessly to support our children's learning and want them to know how much we value and appreciate their efforts.

Have a lovely weekend and take care!
