    Week beginning 5th June 2017

Yesterday, the children broke up for half term and we wish you all a very enjoyable week off school. We welcome you back on the 5th June and look forward to the following:

On Monday, our Year 6 children set off for their week long residential journey to the Isle of Wight. This is an amazing school visit which we are sure the children will thoroughly enjoy and hope it will give them an experience that will last them a life time. It is certainly a very important part of our broad and balanced curriculum! They return to school on Friday 9th. We are very grateful for the staff who have agreed to attend this visit as without their willingness to work around the clock supervising the children we would not be able to offer these opportunities to the children. We hope all attending will have a wonderful time. To keep informed about the children and their activities, make sure you are following our Twitter feed for photos and updates!

Also on Monday, the children in Safari will have a vision test (Rainforest class will be the following Monday). If any visual difficulties are identified, parents and carers of children will be notified in writing.

On Tuesday and Wednesdays the children in Year One will have their hearing tested. As above, parents of any children identified as having hearing loss or difficulty will be notified in writing.

On Thursday 8th June, the school will be closed to the children as we will be used as a polling station for the general election. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your understanding that we are acting to ensure the children’s safety.

Some advanced notice that the week beginning 19th June 2017 will be the start of our Healthy Schools Week where we will be really focusing on the importance of a healthy lifestyle including a balanced diet and regular exercise. On the Friday of this week there will be an optional dress up day to celebrate the end of Healthy Schools Week where the children are invited to come to school dressed as something linked to healthy lifestyles e.g. a piece of fruit, vegetable or something sporty. The more imagination used on this day, the better! J

Have a great and rest half term holiday and thank you for your ongoing support.

    Week beginning 22nd May 2017

    Coming up this week…

As part of their International Primary Curriculum topic ‘Fit for Life’ our Year 5 children will be visiting the Toby Carvery this week. On Monday a mix of class 9 and 10 will attend, on Tuesday the remainder of class 9 will visit and on Wednesday the remainder of class 10 will attend. At the end of their learning about the origin and health benefits of certain foods, they will all be given a FREE carvery for lunch. The children will be travelling to the carvery on public transport and therefor this trip is free of charge.

If you have a child in Year 6 just to let you know we have some members of the PTA popping into school in the morning of the 23rd May to take photographs of your children for their leavers’ year book. We thank all the parents who are giving up their own time to put this together to ensure the children have a great keepsake from their primary years.

Thank you also to the parents who have worked hard to organise the Year 6 leavers hoodies, they look fantastic! Please may we ask that children do not wear these until their residential journey to the Isle of Wight. After this, the children may wear them as a jacket when travelling to and from school but will be required to wear full school uniform during the day (school sweatshirt, not the hoody instead of the school sweatshirt!). In the final week of school in July, our Year 6s may wear their hoodies in school (instead of their school sweatshirts if they wish).

Please may we remind parents of children in class 6 that the class assembly that was scheduled for 24th May has been rearranged and will now take place on 12th July. Apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused.

On Thursday David from the Croydon Schools Partnership is leading a Cricket festival with our Year 4 children. We are sure they will thoroughly enjoy this event.

The children break up for half term on Thursday at normal time. As previously notified, Friday is an INSET day for staff and is therefore closed to children.

    In other news…

Massive congratulations to our tennis team who have got through to London Schools Games. They will be representing Croydon in the finals. Well done to all involved and to Mr Cooper and Ms Fraser for supporting the children.

On the 10th June some staff from The Hayes including Mrs Evison, Miss Langan, Miss Harman, Mrs Boylan, Mrs Cottingham and Miss Smallwood will be participating in a 5K Inflatable run in Lingfield. They are raising money for the AT society. If you would like to sponsor them for this event you can do so at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/TheHayesTeam . Thank you in anticipation of your support.

We would like to give you advance notice that as of September 2017 Caterlink have increased the price of a school meal. The increase will be from £2.15 per day to £2.20 per day (£11 per week).

Thank you for all the support you have given your children this half term. We wish you all a happy and restful half term break and welcome you all back to school on Monday 5th June for the second half of the summer term.

    Week Beginning 8th May

    Coming up next week…

Good luck to our children in Year 6 who will be sitting their SATs this week. They have worked really hard preparing for these exams and we know they will be brilliant. The children are all ready to embody our school vision and ‘Be the best they can be!’ We are already really proud of them. The timetable and final details have been sent out to parents of children in Year 6 in a letter from Miss Slade.

Children in Year 2 will also be starting some of their statutory tests. These will take place across the month of May. As you will already be aware, these assessments inform the teacher assessment judgments that you will receive in your end of year reports.

Please may we make parents aware that as of Monday 8th May ‘fidget spinners’ (which appear to be the new craze) will be banned from The Hayes. Over the past week the staff have been experiencing some difficulties with spinners causing significant disruption to learning, this coupled with reports of accidents and injuries being caused to children has led us to make the decision to ask you to refrain from allowing your children to bring them into school. Obviously if your child has a sensory impairment or additional need which has been previously discussed with our inclusion team, we can provide a fiddle toy for them if necessary from the school resources. Any child seen with a fidget spinner during the school day will be asked to put it away. If it reappears, please be aware that it may be confiscated to be collected by a parent at the end of the school day. Thank you for your cooperation with this matter.

On Monday, Year 4 children will be experiencing science workshops with staff and students from Riddlesdown.

On Thursday at 9:15 Class one will be leading their assembly to which parents and carers of children in this class are invited. We hope to see you there.

On Friday we will be hosting a parent workshop to outline the schools statutory requirement of promoting the Fundamental British Values. If you wish to come along this will be held in the ICT suite at 9:00.

For parents of children in Year 6, there will be a meeting held at 5pm on Tuesday 16th May regarding the forthcoming residential journey to The Isle of Wight. This will include further details about the planned activities, accommodation, routines and expectations etc. If your child is attending this trip, please do come along.

Finally, for those of you waiting to hear, we are delighted to announce that Mrs Derodra gave birth to a beautiful, healthy baby boy (name yet to be decided). Our huge congratulations go to the Derodra family.

    Have a wonderful weekend!
