We start with a HUGE thank you to all those who were involved in organising, running and supporting the Eid Fair this time last week. I am delighted to let you know that the event raised a staggering £1835! This is a fantastic amount which will go directly back to the children. We have asked the School Council representatives to find out from their class mates where they would like to see this money spent and will share their feedback with you following our next meeting.

Tonight, the PTA are hosting some exciting discos for the children at The Hayes. The children in Reception will have their disco between 2 and 3pm, Children in Year 1 and 2 will be between 3:30 and 4:30pm, Children in Years 3 and 4 will be between 4:45 and 5:45 and lastly, the children in Year 5 and 6 will have their disco between 6:00 and 7:00pm.  Please bring children into the event via the main entrance and they will be dismissed via the Early Years/Reception class doors to avoid congestion. The children in the final disco will enter and leave via the main front entrance. Please can we remind you that NO MOBILE PHONES are permitted at this event. Please ensure these are left at home. Thank you.

Our children in Year 5 will be heading off on their residential visit to Carroty Wood on Monday morning and we know that they will have a fantastic time. They will be accompanied by Mrs Derodra, Mrs Burbeary, Mrs Roberts, Miss Deighan an Mr McEvoy and we are very grateful to these members of staff for working around the clock to make these opportunities happen. The children and staff are due back to school at approximately 2pm on Wednesday but we will keep you updated by text if this is likely to change.

On Tuesday, we bid farewell to Miss Smith, who has been covering class one for the last half term. We are grateful for all she has done for our children and wish her well for the future. We are delighted to be welcoming Miss Banner back to school. She will teach class one from 1st May.

On Wednesday, we invite parents of children in Class 2 to join us for a special class assembly. If you have a child in this class, please join us at 9:10am in the school hall. We would love to see you there.

On Thursday 2nd May, school is closed to children as we are being used as a polling station. We have tied this in with an INSET day to minimise disruption to families.

On Friday morning, 3Discovery will be joining us to lead an e-safety workshop for parents which takes place in the school hall at 9:10. Please do come along to learn more about how to keep your children safe online.

The PTA Ice lolly sale resume after school on Friday this week. From as little as 50p, children can purchase an ice lolly after school.

Please note that the following Monday, 6th May, is a bank holiday and school is closed.

Week beginning Monday 22nd April 2024

It was wonderful to welcome the children back to school this week.  We hope they have enjoyed seeing their friends and returning to their learning.

Thank you to all those who helped to organise our Eid Fair on Friday and to those of you who baked for, or came along to support this event. With amazing food, henna tattoos, sweet cones and cupcakes, it was a wonderful occasion. We will shortly be uploading some photographs to the school gallery on our website and look forward to letting you know how much was raised. Congratulations to Mrs Brincat who won the amazing cake from the amazing Cake Canvas and to Mrs Bittar who won the afternoon tea for 2 at Lord Roberts on the Green. I would also like to thank the many organisations who sponsored this event free of charge including: The Med Kitchen, The Future Plate, Lord Roberts on the Green, Smoking Grill and Steak House, Dawat, Spice Village, My Inky Journal and Cake Canvas.

Congratulations to all those children who took part in the Mini Marathon yesterday in London. We are very proud of them all and hope you enjoyed this opportunity. Please do send any photographs taken to school via email so that we can celebrate the children’s achievements in the next newsletter. Please also encourage the children to bring their medals to school on Friday and we will congratulate them in our celebration assembly.

Next week, we are exploring Allergy Awareness week. In assembly on Monday, we will talk to the children about what an allergy is, how allergies can affect some people and what we can do to help keep those with allergies to stay safe. Please can we remind all parents that we do not allow items containing nuts in school to protect children in our school with severe allergies. Thank you.

On Tuesday, it is St. George’s day and those who are members of uniformed organisations (Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Cubs, Scouts, Beavers etc) are all invited to wear their uniforms to school should they wish to do so.

Also on Tuesday, Miss Headley- our maths co-ordinator, will be hosting a Calculations workshop for parents of children in Years R, 1 and 2. If you would like to find out more about how we teach maths at school, please do join us in the hall for a 9:15 start.

Soundstart resumes on 23rd April, so if you have a child in Year 4, please do make sure they bring their instruments.  Even number classes will be swimming next week.

There is a meeting for parents of children in Year 6 about the upcoming Isle of Wight visit on Thursday 25th April, after school. Please do join us in Class 12. We hope to begin at approximately 3:25. If required, children can wait in class 11 during the meeting, where they will be supervised by a member of staff.

On Friday, the PTA are hosting their next disco. Children in Reception will have their own disco this term, in the hall, with some party games from 2pm. All other Year group events will take place afterschool at the times advertised by the PTA.   Tickets are available on the PTA events page which can be found here The Hayes PTA (pta-events.co.uk). Ticket sales close on the 23rd April at 8pm.

Lastly, please can we encourage you once more to vote for our PTA in the ‘Movement for Good’ programme in which, as a registered charity, they are eligible to win a £1,000 prize. If successful, this money will go back into our school to benefit the children. The more nominations we receive the higher our chance of winning. Please spread the word with your friends and family by sharing the link below. Nominations takes approx. 1 minute.

Week beginning Monday 25th March 2024

The children in Year one had a fantastic time with Karen's pets and ponies on Friday. With lambs (just one week old), rabbits, chicks, ponies and more, they certainly had their work cut out! The children learned how to care for the animals and enjoyed the opportunity to handle them and groom them. Check out the photos on our school website in the gallery. You can also see some images of our comic relief fund raising efforts...more to follow!

On Monday next week, we are hosting our egg rolling competition. For your child to enter they need to bring a HARD-BOILED egg to school. There will be a first, second and third place prize awarded in each year group and prizes will be given courtesy of the PTA.

Also on Monday, we are sending a small group of children from Year 6 to an interschool ‘Public Speaking’ competition. This is a great opportunity for our children to build confidence and discuss matters that are important to them. This event is taking place with children from the South Croydon Learning Alliance (a group of local schools who work in collaboration) and we wish all children competing the best of luck.

On Tuesday, Reverend Elizabeth is joining our Reception cohort to teach them about the Easter story. We are looking forward to welcoming her into school.

School finishes for the Easter holidays on Thursday afternoon (28th) at normal time. There will be an assembly on the last day of term, at which we will announce the winners of our Eggceptional people competition and draw the prizes for the Rainbow Raffle. Tickets can be purchasesd on the PTA events page. Sales close on Tuesday 26th March. Thank you to all those who donated an item to create the winner’s hampers.  Summer term begins with an INSET Day on Monday 15th April and we look forward to welcoming back all children, at normal time on Tuesday 16th April.

SAVE THE DATE: After school on the 19th April, we will be holding a celebration of Eid event. At this event you could win a Lord Roberts on the Green voucher for afternoon tea for two, enjoy some delicious foods from local businesses including The Med Kitchen, Smokin' Grill and Steakhouse, Dawat and more, who have all offered to fry a huge number of samosas for us.  The Future Plate will also be offering declicious jollof rice and parents and community members will be cooking biryani and pilau (veg and non veg options) served warm. Cake Canvas will be doing a cake give away alongside other stalls offering personalised bookmarks, Henna tatoos and more! We would like to thank all of the organisations for supporting this community fundraising event and all of our parents and the PTA who are involved in organising this. It is set to be a great afternoon and we hope to see lots of you there!

Lastly, to all those celebrating, we wish you a Happy Easter and to everybody in our community we wish you a relaxing and restful break.  We look forward to welcoming everybody back for the Summer term on Tuesday 16th April.

Thank you to all those who sponsored the children in their red nose day fundraising. So far, we have managed to raise £267, all of which goes directly to the comic relief charity. If you have not yet donated but would like to the link is…https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/rnd24-the-hayes-primary-school-3187f6a4-35b1-487a-aaa4-a9f0bee39f98?reference=copyLink

On Monday, we are having a new sound field system fitted in Class 4 courtesy of TESCO. You may remember we won the ‘blue token’ vote to improve access for children with hearing impairments meaning that this improvement to our environment is fully funded. Thank you, TESCO!

The Scholastic Book fair is on next week and will be running from Monday to Wednesday out side of the Reception Classrooms. Please do pop along with your children. They may wish to spend their world book day vouchers.

On Tuesday and Thursday next week, we are holding our parents’ evenings. If you have not already booked an appointment and need assistance, please call the office who will be happy to help.  Face to face appointments will be in the hall. Please take a seat outside the hall until you are called in. We are looking forward to sharing your children’s achievements with you.

Due to parents’ evenings, there will be NO YEAR 6 BOOSTERS next week.

Class 6 will be hosting our assembly on Wednesday morning. If you have a child in this class, please come to the hall for a 9:10 start. We hope to see you there. Photos may be taken for personal use only.

Year 1 will be visited on Friday by Karen’s pets and ponies on Friday morning. If you have not already provided your consent/payment on ParentPay, please log on to do so.

We are still collecting for our rainbow raffle until Friday 22nd. Thank you to all those who have donated an item for this PTA event.

There are still a small number of spaces left in the TSC miniLondon marathon event for children in years 4+. This is the slightly longer route 2.6K (approx. 1.6 miles). If this is of interest to you, please reserve a space for your child on Parentpay. Every finisher gets an official London Marathon medal and earns a £10 donation for the school.  If your child has a space in the shorter, 1 mile race, and are in Year 2 or below, there are a very small number of parent places still available too (we were granted some additional places), these can also be booked on Parentpay.

Lastly, thank you to all those who supported the school council’s Valentines bake sale last month. Yesterday the children enjoyed playing with a wide range of new playground equipment that they requested themselves. We are still waiting on delivery of some of the larger pieces of equipment but lots of fun was had by all, thanks to your generosity.

I am also very excited to share that, after letting parents know about the Amazon ‘unlock a smile competition’ in a November bulletin, one of our year 6 pupils, Ajwah, entered the competition and has been announced as the winner of the 8-10yrs category. Ajwah has won herself an Amazon goodie bag and a whopping £1000 for our school! Ajwah has expressed that she would like this money to be invested in play equipment for the children and so we are currently looking at options. I will share a photograph of her winning entry in the April newsletter or, you may spot this for yourselves at Kenley station. CONGRATULATIONS AND THANK YOU AJWAH!

    Have a lovely weekend.

    Week beginning 29th January 2024

Congratulations to all of the children who participated in the Croydon swimming gala last week. They represented our school fantastically well and demonstrated our vision of being the best they can be! Our thanks go to Miss Browne and Mrs Aamir for helping the children to prepare for this gala. Thank you also to you, the parents and carers for your fantastic support on the day and in getting the children to and from the event.

A huge well done also goes to the girls’ netball team who won their match against Smitham 17-5…an amazing achievement!

On Monday, the children in the Infant choir will be attending their first area rehearsal for the Croydon Schools Music Association concert. This will take place at Beaumont and parents of children participating can collect from there at 3pm. Thank you to those parents who have agreed to help with this visit.

On Thursday 1st of February, Miss Hale will be spending time in school with Mrs Blewitt to get to know her class and have a hand over of information before her return to work following a maternity leave the on the 7th February.

On this day the school nursing team will also be visiting to conduct the Reception Height and Weight check. The team will also be seeing some of the Year 6 children.

We are very excited to welcome back Three Discovery next week who will be leading internet safety workshops with all of the children across the school.  Unfortunately, only 2 parents expressed, on our interest poll, that they would be interested in a parent workshop on the same topic, so we have been unable to secure their expertise for such an event.

There is a netball match (away) against Chipsted Valley next Friday. We wish the team the best of luck.

Just to finish with a couple of reminders…

We are a water only school. Please do not send children into school with cartons of sugary juices. Water is available to all children at lunch time and throughout the day. Please remind your children to bring a water bottle for this purpose.

The PTA will be holding the next school disco on Friday 9th February. All year groups are invited and tickets will go on-sale at 10am on Saturday 27th January. Sales will close at 10pm on Monday 5th February. Tickets are £5 and can be brought here https://www.pta-events.co.uk/thehayes/. Full details are on the website.

Odd number classes will be swimming this week.

    Week Beginning 22nd January 2024

Thank you to all those who attended our parent workshop on Thursday this week and for your positive feedback on our new approach to teaching spellings. We will soon be running a calculation workshop for parents to support your understanding of the methods we use to teach children maths. We are also about to work with 3Discovery to lead workshops on internet safety for the children. We are considering a parent workshop on the same topic but would like to gauge if there is interest in this before we confirm with the providers. We are aware that many of the children have been given new devices over the holiday period. If you would be interested in attending a parent workshop about keeping your children safe on line, please could you indicate your interest on the following google form. If there is enough interest, we will arrange this for you. https://forms.gle/2apPU7K4bic5Qirr7

If your child is unwell or going to be absent from school for any reason, please can we remind you that the correct email address to use to report this is absence@hayesprimary.croydon.sch.uk. Requests for leave of absence for routine appointments such as dentist check ups should be made during the school holiday. These will not be authorised.

Monday the 22nd January is World RE day and our RE co-ordinator, Mrs Derodra, will be leading assembly on Monday morning to celebrate the religious diversity within our school. One of our core values at The Hayes is tolerance and the more we learn about each other the better our understanding becomes.

On Wednesday, Class 9 will be leading assembly at 9:10 in the school hall. If you have a child in this class and wish to join us, we would love to see you there.

The school council will be meeting on Thursday this week, with the manager of Aspens, to share their feedback on school meals and ask any questions they may have. If your child would like an issue raised, please encourage them to speak to their class reps about it. They are the service users of our catering contract and it is important that their voice is heard.

Also on Thursday after school, there is a netball match scheduled at home against Smitham. We wish the children competing the best of luck.

On Friday, the children in Reception will be having a dental check with NHS staff. If any worries or concerns are identified, you will be notified directly.

Also, on Friday morning we wish good luck to those taking part in the Croydon School’s Swimming Gala. I would like to thank Miss Browne and Mrs Aamir for helping the children prepare for this event and parents for transporting your children to and from the event. We know the children will ‘Be the best they can be’ and will hopefully bring back some silverware for our trophy cabinet!

    Have a great weekend.
