    Sat 06 May 2023

Weekly Bulletin: Week Beginning Tuesday 9th May, 2023
    Class 7 Assembly:
what a polished assembly! Class 7 took us on a dynamic journey around the human digestive system and presented their information with enthusiasm, expression and aplomb, Fantastic actors and actresses! Well done all and well done to Mrs Knapman!

Coronation: on Friday, Miss Slade prepared us all with an assembly to celebrate the King’s Coronation to include facts and royal music. The ceremony is now over and what a ceremony it was! Certainly, a day to remember. Did you know that Westminster Abbey has been Britain's coronation church since 1066 and King Charles III will be the 40th reigning monarch to be crowned? As Miss Slade said to the children, ‘I wonder how the King will be able to hold the Sceptres and Orb at the same time?’ Now we know! A new era….
Year 6 SATs: next week, our Year 6s will take their SATs (Statutory Standard Assessment Tests) and have all been working really hard. We know they will be the best they can be. As we have said to them, the tests do not assess what makes them special, amazing and unique. The adults who create the tests and mark them, do not know each of the children the way we do and without doubt, not in the way their families do. They do not know that Year 6 are kind, loyal, patient, wonderful, trustworthy and thoughtful. There is no way to ‘test’ all of the amazing and awesome things that make the children superstars. So….
Don’t get stressed, just do your best. Remember, you’ve been blessed with skills SATs can’t test.

Many thanks to all staff who have taught or supported this cohort from Reception to Year 6, there are many and each one has made a difference on their educational journey and thank you also to our parents and carers for your support along the way!

On Tuesday, Year 6 will be taking the English Grammar Punctuation and Spelling Papers in the morning, on Wednesday, they will take the Reading tests, on Thursday it will be Maths Papers 1 and 2 and finally, on Friday, Maths Paper 3.

Swimming: there will be no swimming next week due to the swimming staff being needed in Year 6. Swimming will resume, week beginning 15th May 2023.

School Uniform: to remind, PE kits (school uniform) should be worn for sport. The only logo on PE kits should be the school one, thank you. A reminder: indoor PE: black shorts, white t shirt (with school logo or plain) and plimsolls. Plain dark jogging bottoms and grey sweatshirt (M&S- logo or no logo) for cold weather and trainers for outdoor PE. Please ensure your child/ren wear the correct uniform for PE and the correct footwear. We do have a supply of plimsolls and school uniform for children to borrow/have if there are any problems purchasing them. Also, a reminder that school shoes should also be worn – black again, no trainers. Thank you!

Have a good rest of Bank Holiday weekend and see you all on Tuesday 9th May.
    Take care,
    The Hayes Team

  • 1st May 2023

    Wed 03 May 2023

    Week beginning 1st May 2023

We start this week’s bulletin with a huge well done to the children (and parents) who represented The Hayes in the TCS Mini London Marathon last weekend. 30 children ran the 1-mile race in the glorious sunshine, through the centre of London, finishing on The Mall after running past Buckingham Palace. For each child who crossed the finish line, the London Marathon donated £10 for our school to spend on PE or computing equipment…so £300 in total! Thank you to the parents for bringing your children to this event to enable their participation.

Science Week: we also want to celebrate the amazing achievements of our children last week who took part in ‘Science week’ which was organised brilliantly by Mrs Piamya, our science co-ordinator. All children took part in a fun science work shop with Gooey Stuey and I am sure you will see from the look on their faces, much fun and exciting learning was had by all! Thank you Mrs Piamya!

Bank Holiday, Coronation Celebrations: as you will be aware, Monday is a Bank Holiday and school will be closed. We hope you enjoy another long weekend!

Deaf Awareness Week: this week in school, we are celebrating Deaf Awareness Week. Where we seek to raise the awareness of children of deaf issues, people and culture. We seek to promote the positive aspects of deafness, encouraging social inclusion, and raising awareness of organisations that support those who are deaf.

Year 6 SATs: next week, Year 6 take their statutory SATs tests, from Tuesday-Friday. A letter will go out tomorrow regarding the timetable to Year 6 parents. Good luck to all of Year 6, who have been working really hard and we are super proud of you – the week will soon be over!

Year 2 SATs Month: during the month of May, the children in Year 2 will be taking their statutory assessments (SATS). These will be carried out in small groups but all children will have completed these by the half term break. Good luck, children!

King’s Coronation: tomorrow (Thursday) we shall be celebrating the Kings Coronation and the children are invited to wear red, white and blue clothing to school instead of their usual school clothes. If it is usually your child’s PE day, please ensure their choice of outfit and shoes are suitable for participating in this lesson. There is also a special menu on this day (this has already been emailed to parents) to mark the occasion and there will be a special assembly and opportunities to make a crown.

DISCO: our PTA will be holding a school disco on the 19th May. Tickets available on the PTA events page. The Hayes PTA (pta-events.co.uk) Sales end on the 17th May.

INSET DAY: school is closed to the children for INSET day on Friday 5th May and on Monday 8th May (additional Bank Holiday to mark the Coronation) so please enjoy your extended weekend when it comes.

    All the best,
    The Hayes Team

    Week beginning 24th April 2023

Welcome back, here’s to a fabulous summer term and we hope the children have enjoyed their first week back at school.

Eid Mubarak! We would like to wish a happy Eid-al-Fitr to all those celebrating yesterday and over the weekend. We wish you a blessed Eid, filled with joy, love and peace. Additionally, a massive thank you to our parents who ran a hugely successful Eid bake sale on Thursday and raised a massive £702 for our school! Thank you also to those of you (there were many!) who supported this by purchasing the lovely items. It was another example of our school community getting together and was great fun!

ABCD Award: congratulations to Miss Hale and Mrs Spencer who this week have won the staff award of going Above and Beyond the Call of Duty, for stepping in to help school council and always being lovely and positive and for always being kind and on hand to help us! Superstars.

Our Amazing Mixed Football Team: colossal congratulations again to our Mixed Football Team who have come top of the Croydon Schools League Division A. They won all 10 matches with the following scores: Hayes 5-1 Kenley; Hayes 7-0 Oasis Byron; Hayes 4-1 Oakwood; Hayes 8-1 Oasis Byron; Hayes 3-0 St Davids; Hayes 3-0 Oakwood; Hayes 6-2 Kenley; Hayes 8-0 St Davids; Hayes 4-0 Beaumont; Hayes 4-0 Beaumont (repeat score).
We are immensely proud of you all and yesterday in assembly awarded you with your certificates and medals. You continually played with resilience, passion, respect and pride for your school and are simply fabulous. 1000s of thanks to the coaches, including Miss Hale and Mr Clottey, alongside our parents – this accomplishment could not have happened without you as well. The below photos (and more) can be seen on our on the
    school website.

Here is what’s coming up next week…

We were delighted to welcome back Miss Harman this week following her maternity leave, she has resumed her role as Year 1 class teacher in a job share with Mrs Lishmund. Miss Harman has enjoyed getting to know the children and their families over the last 2 days, we also thank Mrs Lishmund for agreeing to work full time to cover this period of maternity leave. Now that Miss Harman is back at work, Mrs Lishmund can return to teaching Class 4 on a Friday which was her original role prior to covering for maternity. We also thank Miss Smallwood for working full time to ensure consistency for the children up until this point.

St Georges Day: on Monday 24th April, we are celebrating St George’s day in school and the children who are members of uniformed organisations are invited to wear their rainbows, brownies, guides, cubs, scouts, beavers etc uniforms to school.

Science Week: we will also be celebrating Science week this week and the theme is ‘connections’. We thank Miss Piamya, our science co-ordinator, for the hard work that has been put into organising the week’s event. All children will participate in a science workshop and will take part in several Science investigations over the course of the week. A reminder for payment for Science workshops which is £2.50 to enable these events to continue.

Assembly: Class 1 will be leading their assembly to parents on Tuesday 25th April. If you have a child in this class and wish to join us, please do come to the school hall for a 9:15 start.

Strike Day: on Thursday the 27th April (and the 2nd May), the National Union of Teachers (NEU) have called for further strike action. As explained previously, there is no requirement for staff to tell us of their intention to strike.  Unfortunately, following the last period of strike action, when advance notice was given, some of our staff faced negative/unpleasant comments from parents in our school community ahead of their industrial action. This was disappointing to hear. Whilst we recognise that strike action can cause disruption to families, it is the right of an individual to take this action if they feel strongly about issues affecting the education sector and the issues they are fighting for span well beyond teacher pay.  For this reason, whilst previously we tried to get information out earlier, we will not now be in a position to let you know which classes will be closing until the morning of the strike when we will send a text message at 8:00am to confirm arrangements. Please do make contingency plans for child care in the event of class closures.

Free School Meals: please may we remind all parents to check their eligibility for Free School Meals (FSM) including those in the infants who receive universal free school meals. This can attract extra funding to our school that can be used to support the children’s learning needs. As a thank you for parents checking their eligibility, any parent that confirms positive eligibility via lgfl checker or is found to be eligible for free school meals via the checker will receive a £20 voucher to spend in M&S on school uniform as a thank you for taking the time to do this.

Welcome to Mrs Blewit, an experienced teacher who will be teaching Class 3 from next week. She is covering for Miss Hale whilst she is on maternity leave. Miss Hale’s last day was Friday and we wish her and her partner all the very best and much love for the forthcoming months. We cannot wait to see the baby!

Lolly sales will begin after school on Friday 28th April. We thank the PTA for organising these sales. Ice lollies will be available at a cost of 50p or £1 each Friday after school during the summer term.

Thank you for your ongoing support.

    Week beginning 17th April 2023

On Friday, we broke up for the Easter holiday and school will be closed for two weeks. We return back on the 17th April when we start our summer term of learning and fun.

Last Monday, the Local Authority Advisor visited The Hayes. She always writes a report to follow, please read some wonderful comments about our VIP Pupil Advocates alongside the learning behaviours of our children: ‘It was great to be shown around the school by some of your Year 6 pupil VIP advocates who clearly take seriously their pupil leadership roles; they demonstrated good knowledge and genuine pride in their school. They were keen to point out the school values display and explain how everyone in the school understands them. They also described some of the enrichment experiences, such as a visit from a former Olympian, and the value of having a swimming pool on site. They enjoyed showing me the cabinet of trophies and talking about the sporting successes. It was encouraging that, without prompting, they described sporting behaviours and commented on the opposition teams being ‘good sports’ and ‘taking it well when they lost’. During the walk around the school, we observed Little Wandle reading practice groups. This is now fully embedded and there is early evidence of good progress in pupils’ phonics knowledge. As always, pupils throughout the school displayed highly positive learning behaviours and respectful relationships with their peers and adults. Pupils are happy to speak up and it is clear that there is a strong focus on valuing pupil voice in the school.

Class 2 Assembly: a HUGE well done to the children in class 2 who led a fantastic assembly this week all about Lyla and the Secret of Rain and taught us all about Kenya. They performed with great confidence and one child said they had enjoyed the experience of performing to parents so much that they asked Miss Slade if they could do it all over again!

Egg rolling: we would also like to say thank you to our PTA who provided the prizes for the egg rolling competition. The children had fun taking part in this last week and cheered for each other showing great sportsmanship!

Carroty Wood: we were delighted to welcome our Year 5 children back to school on Friday following their residential to Carroty Wood. The children all reported having an amazing time and we thank, once more, the staff who accompanied the children on this exciting opportunity. Despite the rainy weather, the children had a blast and one child reported that it was ‘the best school trip I have ever been on!’ Others said: we really liked the high ropes because we could jump really far and accomplished something that we thought we would never be able to do!’; ‘my favourite part was trying the leap of faith, I actually did it!’ We will upload photographs of the children on the school website, shortly!

ABCD Awards: last week, the going Above and Beyond the Call of Duty award (to celebrate the greatness of our staffing team), went to three of our support staff: Mrs Thornton, for always being kind, caring and helpful and taking us into lunch with a smile! Mr Rainsbury, by always looking after our school and keeping it running. Mrs Scola, for always having a massive smile on her face and making us happy and to Mrs Lee, by being Superhuman! Well done to all.

A message from The Hub at Kenley Memorial Hall: every Thursday during school term time, from 1-2.30pm, the large hall at Kenley Memorial Hall hosts a Play Cafe for adults with pre-school children, offering a light lunch, drinks and a large space for the children to play for a suggested £1 donation. The same day and time, the small hall hosts a Warm Hub Cafe for adults in the community to use, offering a place to meet and chat or relax, with soup, bread and hot drinks. No booking is required. If this is something you are interested in but the day and time don’t work for you, Croydon Council has a list of all the local warm spaces on its website and there is something on offer most days.

Work Experience: over the summer term, we will be working hard to support members of our local community to learn and gain new skills. We will be welcoming a number of work experience students and adults working towards teaching assistant qualifications. We are sure they will be given a warm welcome while they are with us.

Football team: our football team are through to the ‘super league’ and we wish them the best of luck in their first match against St Josephs on 18th April (first week back). We are proud of you and know that you will be the best you can be.

Eid Event: after school on Thursday 20th April, there will be a cake sale in the playground to celebrate Eid.  We thank the parents who have organised this event and wish all the members of our school community celebrating Eid-al- Fitr a special day on Saturday 22nd.

Lolly Sales: PTA summer term lolly sales will resume on Fridays after school. Lollies can be brought for 50p-£1. This is a much cheaper option than the ice cream van that parks outside of the school and all profits go to the PTA/school.

Science Week: we are excited to let you know that the week beginning 24th April will be our whole school ‘Science Week’. The children will have the opportunity to take part in a range of practical experiments throughout the week. We are thrilled that we have been able to book Fizz Pop as part of our ‘Science Week’. Fizz Pop currently runs our afterschool Science club and Stuart is delighted to run Science workshops for the whole school during the week, where each class will take part in hands on experiments. These workshops inspire young people to develop a passion for learning, experimenting and scientific investigation. A donation of £2:50 would be gratefully received to help fund these exciting opportunities. Please pay on ParentPay.

Share Your Creativity in the Great Outdoors Photography Competition: It is time again for a new season of photos for our Great Outdoors Seasonal photography competition. • Week beginning 27th March 2023

    Fri 24 Mar 2023

    Week beginning Monday 27th March
Parent/Carer Meetings: thank you to all of the parents and carers who joined us either virtually or in the hall, this week for our parent-teacher meetings. It was a pleasure to be able to discuss with you your children’s achievements. We are so proud of our hard-working children (and hard-working staff) and hope you are too.
Reception: next week, Mrs Williams will be away from school on a professional development opportunity. We thank Mrs Farr and Mrs Duckett who have kindly agreed to work extra days this week to ensure the children are taught by familiar adults who know them well.
ABCD Awards: are back to celebrate the greatness of our staffing team. Children (and staff) can propose a member of staff for going Above and Beyond the Call of Duty. This week, Miss Macpherson and Miss Moll were chosen for the following reasons: Miss Macpherson: for going above and beyond the call of duty by always willing to help others and being so kind to everyone! Miss Moll: for being kind to us like no other! Superstars!

People that help us: today, the Police visited Reception class for their ‘People that help us’ topic. They learned what a Police Officer does, what they wear, what equipment they have, how they keep us safe and that they are kind adults that we can go to if we need help. ‘We went in a Police car and the siren went off which was cool. The Police help us, they also put baddies into jail and they also do things which are not for baddies, I can go and see them if I was lost in a shop’. Thank you to all of our parents have come into Reception classes over the last few weeks to share with us all about how you help us, we appreciate it so much!

Well done to all swimmers that entered the swimming gala at Trinity High School, not least the 8 children that competed today, in the finals. We are so proud of you all – a particular mention to Seamus who came first in the Year 5 backstroke – superstar! We are lucky to have a swimming pool on site. Swimming teaches vital skills: teamwork, confidence, endurance, balance, coordination. It also teaches children that exercise is fun! Thank you to Miss Browne and Mrs Aamir who teach our children to swim confidently and proficiently.
Congratulations! To all of our wonderful photographers who entered the Miracles of Nature (Winter) competition. All entries were stunning and it was really hard to choose. Her are some of the things our School Council said about the winning photos: ‘I’ve been there! I like how the duck is reflecting on the ice, and hope the dinosaurs do not eat it!’; ‘this one is lovely, the colour contrasts are outstanding. I would like to live in the pagoda for a short time to see the beauty of nature’; ‘I don’t think this is from Croydon! Look at the vastness of the land – the shadows are climbing up on the mountain. I like the emptiness of the photo – I want to be there!’
The winners of the Winter Photography Competition are:
KS1: Dinosaurs can you skate with me? By Margot.
Lower KS2: Winter Fire Sticks, by Thomas.
Upper KS2: Over the mystic mountains, by Sahana.

Winning photos can be seen on our Gallery.
Our next competition is called Miracles of Nature (Spring)- time to take photos of beautiful spring during the Easter holidays! Deadline: May 19th. Please send photos to Mrs Staines: wstaines.306@lgflmail.org Many thanks to Mrs S for being a fab administrator! Please remember that photos can only be taken by children. Thank you.
Reading: Ebooks have been a great resource and will continue to be set for pupils who prefer reading in this way- a great opportunity to access reading books when you are out and about too! However, we always aimed to have hard copies of books to send home and this is now what we are able to offer! After Easter, children following the Little Wandle Phonics Programme will take home a book from the book corner for you to share with them and the phonetically decodable book they have been reading in school. To identify this book please look out for the ‘Big Cat’ symbol. Children should be 95% fluent in the reading of their phonetically decodable book and be able to show off their amazing reading skills. This might sound like an easy read but it means children are able to read for pleasure with fewer challenges; they are able to read with prosody (expression and tone) and with confidence, fluency and automaticity and we hope you enjoy the time they spend reading to you in this way. We ask that these books are returned to school every Wednesday because without our books we are unable to give children the next text that they may require. Any damaged or lost books will need to be replaced so please bare this in mind. Any questions, please contact your class teacher or Mrs Farr via the office

    Next Week!

The Farm! On Monday, we are very excited that a farm will be visiting the children in Year 1.  The children will have a chance to have close encounters with animals such as sheep, pigs, goats and chickens. Look out for photos on our school website soon.
Egg Rolling: on Tuesday, we will be holding our annual Egg Rolling competition. If your child would like to participate, they need to bring to school a HARD BOILED egg. The children will, one at a time, ‘race’ their eggs down a drainpipe to see whose egg will roll the farthest. There will be a prize for first, second and third place in each year group. We are always intrigued by the special ‘tricks’ that children share with us about how they have strengthened their eggs from boiling in certain liquids to painting in nail varnish. Looking forward to it!
Carroty Wood: on Wednesday, our Year 5 children are heading off on their residential journey. They are very excited for this adventure and we have every confidence that they will be wonderful ambassadors for our school while they are away. They will return to school on Friday at approximately 2pm. We will update you if there are any delays to their ETA. As always, we thank the members of staff who have agreed to go on this trip to make these opportunities possible for the children. Without their willingness to work around the clock, our residentials could not happen. Thank you to: Miss Moll, Mrs Randall, M
rs Sinclair, Mrs Kioufi and Mr McEvoy. We are confident that your children will come back with a case load of muddy clothes, a mind full of happy memories and a heart full of joy!
Class Assembly: on Thursday, Class 2 will be leading their special assembly to parents. If you have a child in this class and wish to join us, please do come along to the school hall for a 9:10 start.

Class 1: on Friday, we welcome Miss Harman back to work. She has been on maternity leave for the last year after giving birth to a beautiful baby girl. Miss Harman will return as a job share teacher in Class 1 (after Easter) with Mrs Lishmund. Mrs Lishmund will be teacher in Class 1 on a Monday and Tuesday, and Miss Harman on a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Mrs Lishmund has had a thorough hand over with Miss Harman who is really looking forward to getting to know all of the children and families in Class 1. We thank Mrs Lishmund for agreeing to work full time for as long as she has, to cover this period of maternity absence.

On Friday, we break up for Easter at normal time.  School will be closed for two weeks and we hope you all have a lovely Spring break.  During the holidays, you may wish to take part in the PTA egg hunt which is taking place on Sunday 2nd April. Tickets must be booked in advance on the PTA page. The children return to school on Monday 17th April at normal time.

Thank you for your ongoing support.
    The Hayes Team

    Week beginning 20th March 2023

Thank you to those of you who supported our Red Nose Day fundraising today. Today in assembly, the children learned how Comic Relief supports people less fortunate in the UK and overseas. So far, we have raised £58 for the charity. If you have not yet made your £1 mufti donation on ParentPay, and are in a position to do so, there is still time! Thank you.

INSET DAY: on Monday, the school is closed to the children as we have an INSET day for staff training.  The dates for the INSET day were published at the start of the school year. Please ensure you have made plans for childcare on this day. Thank you.

Parents Evening: we will also be hosting parents evening next week. The opportunity to talk to your child’s teacher can be booked online using the following link Parents' Evening - Parent Details Login (parents-booking.co.uk). On Tuesday 21st, appointments will be in person for EYFS and KS1 and virtual for those in KS2. On Thursday 23rd meetings will be in person for KS2 and virtual for KS1 and EYFS. If you need support to book, please call the office on Monday morning where a member of staff will be happy to assist.  Due to parents’ evenings, there will be NO BOOSTERS next week.

Maths Day: on Thursday 23rd we will also be having a special Maths Day during which children will take part in some additional maths activities throughout the day. The theme is 'Maths is all around' so please make sure you are on the lookout for maths on the way to and from school- can you add the numbers in car license plates or count how many rectangles on a zebra crossing for example?

Recycling: we have a limited number of battery recycling boxes available in the school office. Unfortunately, there are not enough to give one to every family but if you would like a box, please do pop into the office to collect one.

Wishing all the lovely mothers in our school community a Happy Mothers’ Day. Thank you for the love and support that you give to the children at The Hayes.

    Have a lovely weekend.

  • Week beginning 13th March

    Sat 11 Mar 2023

    Week beginning 13th March 2023.

We start our bulletin with a host of ‘Well Dones’ for our amazing children who have achieved so much this week. Congratulations to our football team who played 4 matches and won them all. A great team effort. Our players should be really proud of themselves! Well done also to the children in Class 5 who led a wonderful class assembly sharing their incredible knowledge of rocks, superstars! Well done also to our infant and junior choirs who wowed their audiences at the Fairfield Halls with their wonderful singing this week. We are super proud of you all. We hope you enjoyed the concerts as much as we did.

Football: last week our Mixed Football Team played Kenley and won 6-2, played St Davids and won 8-0 played Beaumont two times and won 4-0 both times. Amazing playing this term, super teamwork and it is highly likely they will win the League, watch this space (cannot really announce it until we have been officially told!) Thank you also to all of the parents who have supported at the matches – you have been integral to the success of the team, alongside the coaches, Miss Hale and Mr Clottey. Photos to come!

Choirs: on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, our Infant and Junior choirs performed at the Fairfield Halls after a term of rehearsals and hard work. They were all spectacular and raised the roof! Thank you also to all the parents who supported and came to the concerts. Pupil voice from the Junior Choir: ‘I had the best time of my life, one of my best experiences because I got to sing in front of millions of people and I met the Mayor’. ‘I thought last night was amazing, it feels really good to sing in front of so many and the reception I got after and the response from the audience, made me feel on top of the world’.

Swimming: as stated in last week’s bulletin, we are so immensely proud of our swimmers that took part in last week’s swimming gala at Trinity School. We have since heard that we have won a trophy for Best Team and Best Boys’ Team! Well done all! Super achievements. We look forward to the swimming finals on Friday. Photos of the team, to come.

Identity and Community: we were joined in school this week by Cordelia Shaw who led identity and community workshops with our upper junior children. ‘Cordelia asked us what identity was and explained that we could have multiple identities and communities. She explained that we are all different. I think it was really good, including what she said about finger prints – no two are the same. We did our own finger prints to prove this!’.

Sport: yesterday was a busy and exciting day, joined by Pierre Henry-Fontaine. The children took part in exercise circuits and had the opportunity to ask him many questions. Many thanks to all who have sponsored our children, we have raised over £1309 for our school. This will go towards sporting equipment. Thank you.

PTA: Mother’s Day Gift Room: the PTA will continue to run this room next week, on Monday, Tuesday and Friday.

Inclusion and Diversity: on Monday, Mrs Sinclair is leading an Inclusion and Diversity working party to which parents are invited to attend. This will take place in Class 5 and all are welcome to join. The aim of this group is to explore ways that we, as an organisation, can become more inclusive and better able to celebrate the diversity that we have in our community. There will be a facility for school age children to be looked after whilst you attend the meeting if you require this.

Neurodiversity: next week is neurodiversity week and, on Tuesday, we are hosting our SEND coffee morning. Mrs Roberts will be delivering a Neurodiversity presentation and there will be chance to meet to talk to other parents and the SEND team. If you would like to come along, the meeting will start at 9:00 am.

Strike Days: the National Education Union have called for further strike action from teachers on Wednesday the 15th and Thursday 16th and there is a possibility that our school may experience some classroom closures as a result of this. We will let you know further details, as soon as we possibly can.

On Thursday, staff from the Kenley Aerodrome will be visiting Year 6 to carry out a workshop about the Battle of Britain and how it impacted the Kenley Aerodrome. This is linked to their studies in history and geography.

As per last bulletin, Class 1 Assembly was to be on Thursday 16th March, we have had to rearrange this and it will now be on Tuesday 25th April, from 9:10am. Apologies for the change in day.

Red Nose Day: ordinarily, we would be taking part in this event on Friday and asking for donations towards class sponsorship events. However, we know you have been generous in so many ways this year, not least for yesterday’s fund raising with the Olympian, cake bakes, etc and all this whilst home bills are ever increasing! We thank you so much for your generosity. Although RND is very much in our hearts, this year, we will not be asking for any money. Instead, we invite you all to wear anything funny or red, on Friday.

Photo Competition: many thanks to all those who have entered, the photos, so far, are looking great! Deadline is Friday 17th March, so you still have time to enter!

Have a fantastic weekend and see you all on Monday!

    Week Beginning 6th March 2023

Book Week: Wow, wow, wow! What a fun packed book week we have all had. From cake decorating to dressing up, an amazing author visit and stop everything and read, we have been immersed in a love of reading! A massive well done to Mrs Farr, our reading lead, who has organised the week, we have all loved every minute!

A message from Mrs Farr! Mrs Farr would like to thank all the staff, children, parents and carers, for their effort in making our Book Week such a fun and memorable event. It was lovely to see so many parents and carers at our stop and read session on Wednesday afternoon. The theme of the week was 'Reading for Pleasure' and we really hope that the children have enjoyed their week and continue to build a love of reading. The cake sale on Monday was a huge success raising just over £150 for the school.

Our Cake Competition winners were as follows:

    • Hayden's Gingerbread Man Cake
    • Lola's Hungry Caterpillar Cakes
    • Ruth’s Edward Tulane Cake
    • Darcey’s Moonlight Rider Cupcakes

Thank you to all the children that took part. Photos of the event will go up on our Gallery, in due course.

The Scholastic Book Fair will return to school on Monday 13th to Wednesday 15th March where you will be able to purchase books and a range of stationery goods after school on these dates.

Our thanks go to Mrs Farr for organising the week’s events!

Mixed Football Team: a massive well done to our mixed football team who won 3-0 against Oakwood on Wednesday. You all played fantastically and we are very proud of you. Particular note to Harry who was injured mid game and carried on, scoring 2 goals. Superstar! Well done also to Kayden who scored the other goal. Additionally, there are a number of matches coming up next week (Monday: Kenley Primary, Tuesday: St Davids and Thursday against Beaumont) which Miss Hale would have contacted you about already.

Swimming Gala: congratulations to all children who participated in the Croydon School's swimming gala today. Everybody gave their best effort and were excellent ambassadors of the school. We are proud of all those who took part and thank Miss Browne and Mrs Aamir for their time in preparing the children for this event. Thank you also to our parents who came along to support and cheer for the children taking part. We appreciate your encouragement. We will find out the results soon.
Mrs Morrish and Mrs Edwards came back to school after and said: ‘we are so proud of The Hayes children who supported each other beautifully throughout the gala. They showed great sportsmanship and all swam brilliantly, giving their best efforts’.

On Monday next week, we celebrate International Women’s Day (8th March) with a special assembly to promote Gender Equality. To promote a world that is free from bias and stereotypes we will be publicly celebrating women’s achievements and raising awareness of discrimination.

Height and Weight Checks: also on Monday, the children in Reception will be visited by the school nursing team for their height and weight checks. The information obtained by the team is not shared directly with the school. You will be contacted directly to discuss any concerns that come to light.

After school on Monday there is an away football match verses Kenley with a 3:30pm kick off. Go team Hayes, we wish you the best of luck!

PREVENT: on Tuesday 7th March and Wednesday 8th March, the Local Authority PREVENT advisor will be visiting school to lead some ‘Identity’ workshops with our children in Year 5 and Year 6. We want all children to feel a sense of belonging and through these workshops children recognise that we are all unique and have differences to celebrate but that we are also connected and share aspects of our lives and identities.  Having a strong sense of identity and belonging has been shown to reduce future risks and vulnerabilities.

Class 5 will be leading our class assembly to the school on Wednesday morning. If you have a child in this class and wish to join us for this event, please come to the school hall for a 9:10 start.

The Infant Choir have their final rehearsal at The Fairfield Halls on Wednesday morning and will be travelling to and from this event by coach. The concert will take place in the evening at 7pm. We wish all children taking part the best of luck, we know you will be FAB! Likewise, the children taking part in the Junior CSMA concert will have their final rehearsal on Thursday morning and will be travelling to and from the event by coach. The Junior concert is at 7pm in the evening and we know, that those of you attending are in for a treat! Our thanks go to Mrs Sinclair for preparing the Infant children and to Miss Slade and Mrs Field for their hard work with the Junior Choir.

Sales for Mothers Day Gift Room are now live to book, Friday 10th March is the shopping day for Rainforest and Safari and the 13th, 14th and 17th for the rest of the school. Sales will close at 10pm on Wednesday 8th March.

On Friday, we welcome Pierre Henry- Fontaine into school who will be leading sporting activities with all of our children. We are excited to meet him and hope that our children will be inspired to live healthy and active lifestyles and fulfil any dreams of becoming pro-athletes! Thank you to all those who have sponsored your children to take part in this event. Some of the monies raised will come to the school to purchase sporting equipment for the children.

Please note, Class 1 Assembly was on Thursday 16th March. We have had to rearrange this and it will now be on Tuesday 25th April, from 9:10am. Apologies for the change in day.

    Have a lovely weekend.

    Sat 25 Feb 2023

PTA Disco: firstly, thank you to our wonderful PTA for organising the school discos on Friday night. The children all appeared to be having a great time and we hope they enjoyed dancing the night away with their friends. It is shared experiences like these that help to build ‘connections’ – one of the 5 ways to Wellbeing all whilst raising much needed funds for the school. Thank you to Steph Roach and her team of helpers and volunteers for making events like this possible.

    National Thinking Day
On Wednesday, our Unformed Organisations came to school, proudly whilst appreciating other countries and cultures, and increasing awareness on global issues. Here they all are, looking splendid!

Book Week: thank you also to the wonderful author Paul Geraghty who spent the day with us on Friday inspiring the children; filling the hall with laughter and fun. This was the perfect way to launch our book week which starts on Monday.
During the week the children will be having lots of opportunities to read for pleasure and to take part in fun events including: a decorated cake competition (children to decorate a cake linked to a book) These should be brought to school on Monday and, after being judged for prize winners, will be sold after school at a cake sale. The profit from this event will be used to purchase new reading books for the children so please do support if you can!
On Wednesday, at 2:40pm, parents are invited to come and join their child in class for a ‘STOP EVERYTHING AND READ’ session!  (This will be on Friday at 2:40pm for the children in Year 2 due to afternoon swimming lessons) We love seeing families share a book together and what better role models could we provide to our children than letting them see our school community PACKED with adults and children who love reading.
Lastly, on Friday, the children may wish to come to school dressed as a character from a book. Staff and children participate in this event, if your child wishes to join in with this, we would love to see them in their costumes.
There will also be an ongoing opportunity moving forward for children in Years R, 1, 2 and 3 to attend a reading club on a Wednesday lunchtime. This is being led by some of our children in Year 6 (and Mrs Sinclair) who will listen to the younger children in our school read. Please do encourage your children to attend every now and then! Our enormous thanks go to Mrs Farr, our Reading Lead for organising what we know will be a very exciting and fun week.

CSMA Infant and Junior Choirs: our Infant and Junior CSMA choirs both have a rehearsal at The Fairfield Halls on Tuesday the 28th. You will have received a letter about this from Miss Slade with further details. The Junior rehearsal is in the morning from 10:00-12.30pm and the Infant rehearsal is in the afternoon from 1:00-3:00pm. They will be travelling on public transport to and from this event.  If you are available to be a parent helper on these visits please do make yourself known to us. Thank you. Tickets for these events are now on sale via the Fairfield Halls and can be purchased on line or by telephone.

National Offer Day: Wednesday 1st of March is national offer day where our Year 6 children find out their secondary school. Once we know where children will be heading in September, we begin to support the transition process with our local schools. Please do reach out to us if your child is upset with their allocated school so we can provide them with emotional support.

NEU Strike: on Thursday 2nd March, there is a possibility that our school may be impacted by the NEU teacher industrial action. A full risk assessment is being conducted at present to ascertain if the school can open or partially open, safely. We will confirm arrangements with you as soon as we possibly can. This can be tricky to do as staff members are not required to disclose their intention to strike. We will be in touch again.

Swimming Gala: on Friday, some children will be participating in the Croydon School’s swimming Gala at Trinity School. Those who have been selected have received a letter notifying them of arrangements for this event. Our thanks go to Miss Browne and Mrs Aamir for the hard work that has been put into preparing the children for this event. Go team Hayes! Be the Best you can be!

Calm Club: lastly, we are delighted to let you know about a new lunch time club which has been arranged by our AMAZING Year 5 Mental Health Champions. This club is called the CALM CLUB and it provides a safe and quiet place for children to stop in during the lunch hour if they have any worries or problems during the lunch break (12:30-1:10pm). Before the half term, our mental health champions undertook research with children across the school about what helps them to calm down when they are worried, anxious or upset. They then placed an order for some items including worry monsters, fiddle toys, yoga equipment, a speaker (to listen to relaxing/meditation music) colouring materials and jigsaws among other things. Many thanks to our PTA for their generous donation which has funded this initiative, thank you. Children can self-refer if they feel they need support or be encouraged by staff to attend if they are dysregulated in their behaviours.
At all times the club will have a Mental Health First Aider on site (Mrs Olley or Mrs Rich) to support the children. We are really proud of our mental health first aiders for leading this peer support across the school, they are willingly giving their time (one day a week) to support others.  Future Leaders no doubt!
Many, many thanks also to Mrs Olley and Mrs Rich who are the pioneers behind this!

Have a great rest of the weekend. Thank you for your ongoing support.

Week Beginning Monday 20th February 2023

It is half term holiday! The children have one week off and will return to school on Monday 20th February, we hope you have a great rest. Huge thank you to our wonderful staff at this time- always going the extra mile. Please have a well-deserved break as well! You are all superstars!

Last week in school, we were celebrating Children’s Mental Health Week with the theme ‘Let’s connect’. The children spent time thinking about people and places that they feel connected to. We identified one child in each class who makes positive and kind connections to those around them. Those chosen were awarded with a special prize in assembly on Friday. We are PROUD to celebrate their KINDNESS. Additionally, as always on Friday, we were all outside at break to dance and enjoy the music for Funky Friday, from Macarena to YMCA! A huge thank you to Mrs Olley who organised the week and Mrs Staines who had the idea of kind connections. Great ideas!

On Wednesday, Class 9 led a wonderful class assembly which was all about Kindness. Their singing, acting and dancing were fantastic with a clear moral to the story. Do not be like the Emperor (who had new clothes), he was unkind and conceited (although the child who took this role is far from this), be proud of what you do but do not make a fuss, do not get too big for your boots (words from a child in Year 5!)

Football News: our mixed team have had a great half term, beating Oakwood 4-1 and Oasis Byron 8-1; a close game against Ridgeway who won 3-2 and on Thursday, beating St David’s 3-0! Amazing scores – well done Team, you are all amazing and thank you to their coaches, Miss Hale and Mr Clottey!

Thank you to our PTA for hosting our Valentines cake sale/ World Book Day costume sale after school, on Friday and to those of you who baked for this event or supported by buying cakes- the cakes looked amazing! We will let you know how much was raised asap.

Other PTA dates for your diary:
*Friday 24th February: Discos (see photo for rest of dates).

Next term, on Friday 10th March, we will be visited by a professional basketball player called Pierre-Henry Fontaine. To learn more about Pierre you can use this link The Hayes Primary School Fundraiser - a Community crowdfunding project in Kenley by Sports For Champions UK (CIC) (crowdfunder.co.uk). He will be leading sponsored fitness events with the children and aiming to inspire them to be physically and mentally active. On Friday, your children will have brought home a sponsorship form.  If you are able, please do encourage the children to collect sponsors for this event as the school will also benefit from this fundraising initiative, raising funds for new PE equipment for the school.

A message from our Reading Leader, Mrs Farr: we are excited to welcome to our school, award winning children's author Paul Geraghty! He will be visiting on Friday 24th February to carry out workshops with the children throughout the day, and share some of his amazing illustrations. He will also be selling his books after school for £7 each and will offer book signings too! We hope you are able to come along and meet him- please come to the stage on the playground to meet Paul and to buy a signed book!
The following week, will see the start of our Book Week to celebrate World Book Day! We have the popular Cake Sale Competition after school on Monday 27th February in which we invite children to bring in cakes or cupcakes decorated in the style of their favourite story. Please bring cakes into school on the morning of Monday 27th February ready to be sold after school. Cakes will be judged and winners announced at the end of the week. Come and enjoy a 'Stop and Read' at 2:30pm on Wednesday 1st March where we invite you to come into school and share a story with your child/children in their classroom

Friday 3rd March is our Dress Up Day where we invite children to bring in £1 and dress up in the style of their favourite book or story character. All proceeds made during our Book Week will go towards new texts for our children to read and enjoy.

Share Your Creativity in the Great Outdoors Photography Competition

Each season we run the Great Outdoors Seasonal photography competition. It is now Winter (until 20th March), so, get out in the great outdoors and enjoy the wonders of nature and wildlife around us!

What to do: take a photograph that celebrates winter as you see it. Photos should feature landscape or portrait photographs of natural settings. It can be of wildlife, woodland, seascape – of anything that depicts winter at its finest.
Equipment: the photo can be taken on a tablet, phone or camera.
Winners: there will be one winner from each Phase: EYFS, KS1, Lower KS2 and Upper KS2.

Prizes: winning photos will take pride of place in our news bulletin, website and Twitter pages. The winning photos will be displayed in a large frame in the school corridor in the form of a collage.

    Terms and Conditions

*Photograph to be taken by a child (not adult) on either a camera, tablet or smart phone.

    *One entry per child.
    *Photo to have a title.

*Entrants email to Mrs Staines: wstaines.306@lgflmail.org who is the administrator for this exciting, new competition.
*With entries (jpg), please state name of child and class.
*Closing date: Friday 17th March, 12pm
*Judges: our School Council, Governors and Miss Slade.

Ahead of next term, please may we ask/remind you that:

*Children are not permitted to bring PRIME water bottles into school. We know that this is a popular drink with young people at the moment but they are not appropriate for school, please do not allow your child to use these bottles for their school drink even if they are filled with regular water.

*Snacks for breaktime should be fruit or vegetables only (unless an alternative is agreed with the school due to an allergy/medical issue). We are a healthy school and do not permit biscuits/crisps as a snack. We do not teach the children that alternative options are ‘bad’ choices and very much promote an everything during moderation approach. However, during the school day we promote healthy choices and appreciate your support in this regard.
*If your child is in KS2 and bringing a pencil case to school, please can you ensure that this is a plain pencil case with basic supplies only. Many children are being distracted in class with novelty pencil cases and flashy equipment. Please keep these basic. Thank you!

That just leaves us to say, enjoy the half term holiday and stay safe!

    The Hayes Team.
