    Week beginning 2nd October 2023

We start our bulletin with a success story this week and wish to congratulate our boys’ football team who played, and won, their first league game against St David’s yesterday after school. Their first match was won 3-0 and the second 5-2. Not only did the boys play skilfully, they demonstrated great teamwork, sportsmanship and respect towards their opponents, shaking hands and giving them three cheers. We are really proud.

With a strong commitment to equality of opportunity, we are excited to also let you know that this year, for the first time, we have managed to put together a girls’ football team who trained after school today with Mr McEvoy as their coach. Our girls demonstrated some fantastic skills, worked well as a team and demonstrated their strong desire to fulfil our Hayes Vision to ‘Be the Best they can be!’ Their first league match is in November and we are excited to support them on their footballing journey!

Today in school we celebrated National Teaching Assistant Day. We reflected in assembly about the importance of showing gratitude and saying thank you to people who help us. The children offered their messages of appreciation to our team of support staff thanking them for ‘helping me to learn and progress’, ‘playing with me in the playground’, ‘cheering me up when I am feeling sad’ among many other things.

Next week marks the start of Black History Month. The theme this year is ‘Before-Windrush’ and throughout the month, the children will have the chance to take part in a range of learning opportunities to broaden their cultural understanding. We begin on Monday and Tuesday with all children participating in African drumming workshops that have been fully funded by our amazing PTA. Thank you!

Also, on Monday, the children in class 11 will be leading our Harvest assembly at 9:10am in the school hall. Parents of children in this class are invited to attend. We would like to thank parents for your generous donations of non- perishable food items and toiletries. We will still accept these on Monday if you have not yet had a chance to donate and wish to. All foods collected will be given to the Purley Food Hub to support local families. We are grateful to the hub for their efforts to ensure that no child or family, in our local area, goes hungry. If you are experiencing hardship and need support, please do talk to us, we may be able to help.

On Tuesday, we are excited to let you know that our children in Year 5 will be participating in training with a Mental Health and Wellbeing organisation called One Goal. This training will help the children to learn how to become Mental Health Champions. It is designed to help children better understand and manage their own mental health needs and encourage them to reflect on how they can support and promote the wellbeing of others.  Once trained, we will be looking to re-instate our lunch time 'Calm Club' to provide peer support to children who may be feeling dysregulated or in need of emotional support at lunch time. More details to follow soon.

On Thursday, we are holding an open morning for parents of children due to start school in September 2024.  This begins at 9:30am in the school hall. If you wish to attend, please ensure you have booked a place on our school website. The link can be found here: Reception Open Mornings | The Hayes Primary School

Next Thursday is also our school CENSUS day. On this day, the number of children who eat a school dinner has a direct impact on the funding that we receive for the rest of the year. With this in mind, we appeal to you to encourage as many children as possible to have a school dinner. To make it more tempting for the children, we will be swapping the Thursday and Friday menu for next week as our data shows us that the Friday menu is our most popular choice.

On Friday, the school photographer is in school and will be taking individual and sibling photographs. Please ensure, as always, that children are in the correct full school uniform. If your child has PE on this day, please send them in uniform and pack their PE kits and trainers in their bags. They will be permitted to change after they have had their photographs taken.

In the evening, the PTA are holding their first school disco of the year. Tickets are available for purchase on the PTA page along with information about timing of these events. If your children are going straight from school to the disco (Years 1 and 2), you may wish to pack them a small snack (nut free) to eat after school to ensure they have enough energy to dance the night away! Children in Reception will have a smaller in-class disco before the end of the school day.

Have a wonderful weekend. See you in October!

  • Week beginning 17th July 2023

    Sun 16 Jul 2023

Week beginning Monday 17th July 2023

The final week of the school year is upon us. I know we always say time flies when you are having fun but this year really does seem to have whizzed by!

Year 6 Musical: yesterday, we really enjoyed watching our Year 6 cohort in their leaver’s performance: ‘I am an 11 year old - Get Me Out Of Here!’.  It was an amazing night and we are incredibly proud of the children they have become. They were confident, funny, acted and sang fantastically – the show was outstanding. As the lyrics state: ‘how we’ve blossomed, how we’ve grown each and every day. We’re walking tall and ready for whatever comes our way. But now we are going to be leaving, got to spread our wings and fly, though we don’t want to believe it, it’s time to say goodbye!
    Some quotes from the performers:
‘An incredible performance of fun and laughter!’ (AR)
‘Amazingly all inclusive for any age!’ (AH)
    ‘Spectacular singing performances!’ (IS)
‘Great acting skills by all’. (MH)

We hope you enjoyed the show as much as we did and photos will be up on the Gallery of our website very soon!

Books: your children’s learning will be coming home next week (books), please can you provide your child with a carrier bag to put their books in, thank you!

Teaching Assistant: we have a full-time vacancy for teaching assistant, starting from September. Please click this link for further details.

Goodbye: it is with much sadness that Mrs Field is leaving us at the end of this term. She has worked with us at The Hayes for the last 17 years and over this period of time she has supported many children as a 1:1, a class TA and most recently through speech and language support. We will be sad to see her go.

Here is what is coming up next week…

Funday Monday: on Monday, we are having an end of term ‘fun day’ to celebrate many things – the many achievements this year, the good OFSTED report and of course to say farewell to Miss Slade. There will be some bouncy castles in school with a rota in place to ensure that all children have a chance to bounce! We will also be holding a special gathering after school in the playground for any families (old and new) wishing to say thank you and good luck to Miss Slade. Weather permitting, there will be music and a selection of sweet treats (free of charge) so that as a community, we can come together to give a positive and uplifting farewell! Past pupils and families are also welcome to join us at this event so please do let ex-Hayes community members know. Thank you to our PTA for their help in organising this event.

Year 1: Gatton Park: on Tuesday, our Year 1 children are heading out to Gatton Park. The children will have an amazing time looking at plants with some pond dipping! Please check the letter, emailed for what to wear and bring.

Wednesday: Leavers Assembly: we invite parents and carers of children in Year 6 to join us in the school hall for the Year 6 leavers’ assembly. This event has a 10:00am start. Be sure to have your tissues at the ready as we take a journey back through the children’s 7 years at The Hayes. In the afternoon, there will be a leavers barbeque event. This part of the day is for children only.

Thursday: in celebration of Miss Slade, we will have a WHOLE SCHOOL DRESS UP DAY! As we know, Miss Slade has a love of all things fancy dress and to celebrate this, we encourage all staff and children to wear a fun fancy-dress costume of their choice. Reception children are having a pirate themed day and we encourage children in Year R to come as a pirate for this event if possible! For those children who do not enjoy dressing up as much as Miss Slade does, please can come to school wearing some brightly coloured clothing instead.
On Thursday afternoon, the children will have their end of year class parties. We ask each child to bring their own party bag with party food, for themselves. STRICTLY NO NUTS ALLOWED. The children will have already had their school lunch so they do not need copious amounts.

On Friday we break up for the summer holidays at 1:30pm. There will be no after school club on this day.

We would like to thank you all for your ongoing support this year. We have had many successes to be proud of and wish you all a happy and restful Summer holiday.
We look forward to welcoming you back on September 5th 2023 at normal time.

    Stay safe!

  • Week 10th July 2023

    Fri 07 Jul 2023

The end of another week is upon us and we hope you are reading this bulletin in the glorious sunshine!

The Hayes Photography Competition: well done to all of the entrants, superb photography, brilliant colours and shades of spring. Well done, outstanding talent. Members of the School Council and Miss Slade are pleased to announce the following winners for the Spring Photo Comp, 2023:
EYFS: Aryan, Rainforest: Ducks are favourite. ‘Lovely vastness of the land and ducks enjoying their swim! Ripples are clear, great composition!’ (School Council)
    KS1 (Y1/2): no entrants
Lower KS2 (Y3/4): Jacob (Y4): Blossoming Bluebells: ‘this photo is spring – the background being a blur is effective but it is enough that you can imagine that you are there in the moment!’
Upper KS2 (Y5/6): Amelie (Y5): Magnificent Magnolia: ‘vibrant colours in this composition. The magnolia tree is shaped a little like a heart and symbolises spring as do the dancing daffodils’.
Well done superstars, the winning photos will be on the website in due course and in the large frame by the music room!

Year 4, Gatton Park: on Monday 10th, the children in Year 4 will be heading out to Gatton Park for a fun day of den building and pond dipping linked to a previous topic about habitats. We are sure they will have a fantastic time and look forward to hearing all about it.

New Reception: on Wednesday, we will be welcoming our new reception starters for their picnic! This starts at 1:45pm and we cannot wait to see them there! Wednesday is also a pyjama day for children in class 5, a prize from a PTA event, which means that children can attend school in their PJs!

Year 6 musical: on Thursday evening, our Year 6 children will be performing their end of year show to families. We are able to extend our tickets to 3 per family but this may mean that some spectators will need to stand at the back of the hall. The children participating in the show should return to school at 5:30pm and the play should finish around 715pm.

Reports: on Friday 14th, you will receive your child’s end of year school report.  Should you wish to discuss the content of this report or have any questions, please do contact your child’s class teacher who will arrange a mutually convenient appointment to talk with you.

Leaving: it is with sadness that we announce that one of our Higher-Level Teaching Assistants (HLTA), Mrs Kioufi, is leaving The Hayes at the end of this term to pursue her passion of supporting children with special education needs. She has accepted a TA position in a secondary special needs school. We wish her all the best in this new venture, we know you are going to be great!

Goodbye! Lastly, we have been asked by many parents/carers and pupils (past and present) how/when they can say goodbye to Miss Slade. There will be a small gathering on the playground at the end of the day on Monday 17th July for those wishing to come and say farewell. So please do pop this date/time in the diary. We will be merging this day with the Fun Day to celebrate our Ofsted result/report as well. We hope to see you in the playground after school!

    Have a fantastic weekend all!
    The Hayes Team

  • Week beginning 3rd July

    Mon 03 Jul 2023

    Week beginning 3rd July
What a busy week we had last week!
Welcome to our new Reception families and children: we had a wonderful evening on Tuesday welcoming the parents of our new reception cohort into school. Roll on 12th July when we get to spend some time with the new children at our reception picnic!
Music is Magic: on Wednesday evening, we were blown away by our children’s musical talents at our Music is Magic concert.  Thank you to those who joined us for making it such a wonderful event and huge congratulations to all of the children who performed, you are superstars and so very talented! There will be photos of the event on our website, in due course. ‘I was so excited to be in the concert and I enjoyed it because it felt amazing to perform in from of all the parents! I felt very proud’ (RG, Y4)

Year 3, Butser Farm: our Year 3 children had a fantastic time at Butser Roman Farm on Thursday and the children in Class 8 wowed us with their fantastic assembly all about plastic pollution. The children taught us all about plastic going into the ocean. If creatures eat it, they can get so sick, we need to recycle and stop throwing rubbish into the sea. Come on! We can do it!
Sports Day: on Friday, we had a fantastic time at our two sports days. Congratulations to all participants but especially the green team, Johnson who won both the Junior and Infant events! The trophy will be decorated with the green ribbons for the year ahead. Well done to all children for showing great sportsmanship and encouraging one another in each event. School Fete: we had all the fun at the fair! Thank you to our incredible PTA who organised an amazing event for us all on Saturday. From live performances, bouncy castles, sponging the teachers (or Mr McEvoy and Miss Slade!), cake competitions, henna and delicious food, much fun was had by all. We look forward to confirming how much was raised as soon as possible. Thank you also to those of you who donated bottles, toys, cakes and of course, your time to make this event possible.

Here is what is coming up next week…
On Tuesday, there is a culture and diversity meeting taking place at 9am. If you wish to join, please come into school via the main office.
On Wednesday 5th and Friday 7th, there is possible strike action being taken from teachers in the National Education Union (NEU). Please arrange some back up child care as there is a possibility that some classes may be closed. As soon as we know which teachers intend to strike, we will of course let parents know and we hope to do this tomorrow.
On Thursday, we will be holding our class swaps when children will get to visit their new classes and find out their teachers for next year. We will follow these visits up with an email to let you know the staffing arrangements for the year ahead.

During the summer holiday, there is a transition week event for children transferring from Primary to Secondary. Please see the attached flyer for further information if you are interested in this. Finally, if you are planning to buy new uniform for your children for next year, you may wish to take advantage of the M&S discount (20%) which runs from the 4th July on their website (see second attachment for further details).
    Here’s to a great week!

    Week beginning 26th June 2023

Year 2 talent show: on Friday, the children in Year 2 amazed us all with their unbelievable talents in their end of KS1 talent show. We had singers, dancers, musicians, gymnasts, bubble blowers, presenters and comedians to name just a few of the incredible acts. We were blown away by the children’s confidence and as the lyrics stated in ‘This is Me’: keep marching on to the beat you drum and always be YOU!’ Additionally, there will be photos on the Gallery, in due course.

Year 4 Soundstart Concert: we were also very impressed with our children in Year 4 this week as they performed in a Soundstart concert demonstrating their amazing musical skills to parents and children in Year 3. They have come a long way in a short space of time and sound fantastic! We hope that many will choose to continue learning their instruments. Photos of the concert will also be on the Gallery, soon! Well done, Year 4!

ABCD Awards: well done to the following fab members of staff who have been nominated (by our children) for our ABCD awards this week: Mrs Knapman: for going above and beyond by being super helpful, being kind, being a brilliant teacher and amazing! Mrs Kikidis: for sorting out ‘stuff; in the office and all the medical things! For always being helpful with a positive attitude and Mrs Aamir: for being awesome when fasting AND working in the dining hall!

Summer Book Trail: on Monday, we will be visited by a member of staff from Purley library who will be leading assembly to encourage children to participate in the Summer Reading Challenge.  If you are around in the school holidays, why not encourage your child/children to participate in this fun event?

Welcome meeting for reception starters: on Tuesday evening, we shall be welcoming families of our new reception starters to a meeting in the hall, at 6pm. If possible, we ask that children do not attend this meeting. Parents will be given an important pack of information, including details of your child’s class allocation. To this meeting, please can parents bring with them your child’s original birth certificate. A copy will be taken and this will be returned to you during the evening.

Music is Magic: on Wednesday evening our hall will be alive with music at our Music is Magic concert. If your child is performing in this concert and you wish to attend please do join us in the school hall for a 6pm start. Spaces are limited to 2 spectators per performer. We are proud of our children’s musical abilities and are delighted to have this event back in school for the first time since COVID.

Class 8 Assembly: on Thursday, at 9:10am in the school hall, the children in Class 8 will be leading our assembly. If you have a child in this class and you wish to join us for this event, please do come along. We would love to see you there.

Year 3 Trip: on Thursday, the children in Year 3 will be attending their school visit to Butser Roman Farm. We know that they will be excellent ambassadors of the school and will enjoy the opportunity to gain first-hand experience of what it was like to live in Roman times.

Sports Day: On Friday, we will be holding our sports day (weather permitting). KS2 will take place in the morning and KS1 and EYFS in the afternoon. If you wish to join us for the morning session, please come to school for a 9:15am start and in the afternoon come along for 1:30pm. The children may wear a T-shirt in their team colours (Green- Johnson, Blue- Seacole, Yellow- Ashcroft and Red- Johnson). If you are unsure of your child’s team, please check with your child’s teacher. If the weather is warm, please do ensure your child has a sun hat and is protected with sunscreen. All children will require a water bottle.

Summer fair: our summer fair takes place on Saturday 1st July from 12pm - 3pm. Thank you to everyone who has so far volunteered to help. If you haven't already, please sign up on your class doodle poll- without volunteers this event cannot run. We are really grateful to those of you who are able to give us your time. The PTA would also really appreciate donations of pre-loved teddies in good condition and new bottles of alcohol and soft drinks for the bottle tombola. Donations can be accepted on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next week in the boxes by the sheds opposite the reception classes. Thank you in anticipation of your generosity.

There will also be a HAYES bake off competition. There are 2 categories:

CATEGORY 1 – INFANTS and CATEGORY 2 – JUNIORS. Children can bake anything, from whole cakes, cupcakes, tray bakes or brownies. Everything is welcome.

The PTA will also accept donations from bakers that don't want to be judged. Please clearly label as above and deliver before the fair. We hope to see lots of you there.

Fond Farewells: it is with sadness that, in addition to saying farewell to Miss Slade, we shall also be saying goodbye to some other members of staff who will be leaving The Hayes at the end of this term. After devoting a lifetime of working with babies and children (over 6 years with us), Mrs Portou will be retiring. We know she has much to look forward to, not least seeing more of her lovely grandchildren! We thank her for all she has done for the children at The Hayes and will miss her enormously. Miss Moll has made the exciting decision to teach abroad. She has worked at The Hayes since 2019 and has taught many children in KS1 and KS2. Miss Moll has been an excellent teacher to many and whilst we will be very sad to see her go, we look forward to hearing all about her adventures in sunny Spain! Lastly, Miss Hardcastle, in the school, office will be leaving to spend more time with her family. We thank her for all she has done and will miss her warm welcome in the office.

Finally, please see attached flyer from the Ismaili civic community who are now collecting items to support families in the local area who are need help in providing essentials for their babies. If you would like to support this cause, there will be a box outside of the school office for your donations.

Wishing you a lovely weekend in the sunshine.

    Week beginning 19th June 2023

Well done to the children in Rainforest for their amazing assembly on Thursday this week that celebrated our differences and encouraged us all to enjoy our uniqueness! We are all different and that is what makes the world a wonderful place. We were blown away by the children’s confidence. Well done Rainforest and well done to all the staff who made the assembly so special!

On Monday, our Year 2 cohort are heading out on their visit to Chessington to learn all about animals. They are due back to school at the slightly later time of 4:30pm. We are sure they will have a fantastic day and be excellent ambassadors of our school.

Tuesday sees our Reception classes going to Bockett’s Farm for the day. All information has been sent to parents already. We hope the children will have an amazing first school trip! They are all very excited! Furthermore, on Tuesday afternoon, we invite parents of children in Year 4 to join us for our Soundstart concert. The children have been practicing hard all year and are looking forward to showing you what they have learnt. Please join us in the school hall from 2:30pm.

Friday: we invite parents of children in Year 2 to join us for the end of KS1 Talent Show. This event will start at 1:45pm in the school hall. We look forward to seeing you there!

Hot! Hot! Hot! You will have noticed that the weather has changed recently. Please may we remind you that we cannot ask our staff to apply suntan lotion to children. There are plenty of 8hr+ suncreams for children that can be applied before school and will last all day, we recommend these products to avoid the need to ‘top up’ throughout. You may also wish to provide your children with a sun hat that they can wear outside at break and lunch times and please remember water bottles!

The Spring Photography Competition deadline is Tuesday 20th June (last day of spring, believe it or not!) The entrants so far are amazing, but to remind, one photo to be taken by a child (not adult) on either a camera, tablet or smart phone. Each entry should have a title and entrants to be emailed to Mrs Staines: wstaines.306@lgflmail.org. The judges are our members of our School Council, Governors and Miss Slade.
The Summer Photography Competition after the 20th June will then be open until the 14th July. Please send your entries to Mrs Staines, as above. Many thanks!

Photos: please remember to check out our Gallery on the website to see any up-to-date photos of learning taking place throughout the year and of course on our Twitter Feed. Please click here to access the Gallery and here to access our Twitter account. The most recent memories on our website are the Isle of Wight residential and our Geography Day. Enjoy!

That just leaves us to say, have a great weekend!

  • Week beginning Monday 12th June 2023

    Fri 09 Jun 2023

Today we welcomed back our Year 6 children and staff from the Isle of Wight. It was wonderful to see their excited faces return to school. If you would like to see a snippet of what the children got up to, please check out our Twitter account @thehayesprimary.  We are sure the children (and staff) will sleep well tonight and hope they have made memories to last a lifetime.

Next week we have some statutory assessments taking place. Year 4 will carry out the statutory Multiplication Tables Check (MTC). This is to check their rapid recall of multiplication facts up to 12x12. The children will be given 25 randomised questions and will need to input their answer within 6 seconds. As mentioned previously, the ‘Sound check’ tool on timestables rock stars is a great way to practice for this.  Year 1 teachers will also be carrying out statutory Phonics Screening Checks throughout the week where the children’s understanding of phonics will be checked by asking them to read a range of real and nonsense/ alien words (e.g. gan/vap). Both of these assessments are carried out in an informal manner with a teacher that they know well. Year 2 pupils who did not pass the check in Year 1 are required to retake the phonics screening check and this will also take place next week. Your child’s scores will be shared with you in their end of year report.

Please may we remind all families that children are not permitted to wear smart watches that have photo/video or recording technology to school. Children wearing these items will be asked to remove them and they will be kept securely by staff until such times that parents are able to collect. Thank you.

Next week (12-16 June 2023) is Healthy Schools Week/Healthy Eating Week. This event is designed to support and promote healthier lifestyles. The theme for this year is ‘Healthy Eating Week - For Everyone!’. Mrs Shaikh our healthy school’s co-ordinator will introduce the week to the children in our Monday morning assembly. Please may we take this opportunity to remind parents that we are a water only school (milk for EYFS/KS1). Children in KS1 are provided with a piece of fruit for a midmorning snack and children from KS1 may bring a piece of fruit or vegetable from home for their break time too.  May we also remind parents of children who bring packed lunch that children are not permitted to bring sweets or chocolate in their boxes. We are not against children having treats at all and teach them that everything in moderation is a good strategy but we politely request that these items are not consumed during the hours of 8:45 and 3:15 while the children are in school. Thank you for your support in promoting healthy lifestyles.

Our Fathers’ Day gift room is back next week, thanks to our PTA and volunteers for organising and running this event. Tickets cost £3 and are available to purchase on the PTA events page. Children can choose and wrap a special present to take home to a special male role model in their life. This will take place at lunch times in the ICT suite.

CALLING ALL TESCO SHOPPERS! The Hayes will soon be featured at the exit of a number of Tescos stores as we are in the running to potentially receive a community grant to put a new soundfield system in one of our classes to support the learning of children who are hearing impaired.  This will only happen if we win the vote. So, if you are shopping and are offered some blue tokens to place your vote, please do vote for our school. Our bid will be shown in Sanderstead express, Croydon South end, Coulsdon express and Purley extra. Fingers crossed we will be successful and thank you in anticipation of your votes!

Thank you for your ongoing support. Enjoy the forecasted sunshine and have a lovely weekend!

  • Week beginning 5th June

    Fri 26 May 2023

    Week beginning 5th June 2023

Well done to Safari class who led our wonderful assembly on Thursday all about the jungle. We were blown away by their confidence. All children learned their lines and delivered them clearly. We were delighted with their poetry and facts but particularly enjoyed seeing their ‘jungle boogie woogie!’ Thank you to all the parents who joined us for this event.

Geography Day: well done and thank you also to Mrs Boylan, our Geography Leader, who organised our amazing ‘Around the world in 14 classes’. The school was buzzing with excited children on Thursday, all clutching their passports, as they moved around the school to learn about different countries in the world. Thank you also to you the parents for donating food items so the children could learn about the culinary delights in different cultures (and adults), what a feast they had! Why not ask them about their new knowledge? Which was their favourite country and why?
That was the best day!'; 'Food tasting- awesome!'; 'I cannot wait to get to the next country!' Thank you to Mrs Boylan, our Geography leader- superstar!

Open Afternoon: we hope that those of you who joined us for our Open afternoon today enjoyed the opportunity to look at your children’s books and talk to them about their learning. We are proud of the children’s achievements and the progress they have made so far this year. With half a term still to go, the sky is the limit!

Happy Holiday! We break up today for the half term break and would like to thank you for your ongoing support this term. We wish you a restful week and look forward to welcoming you back to school on Monday 5th June at normal time unless your child is in Year 6.
Year 6 Residential to the IOW: Year 6 children will need to be in school by 8:00am at the latest, on Monday 5th when the coach will arrive to take them to their residential journey to the Isle of Wight. We know they will be wonderful ambassadors of our school and wish them a happy visit where we hope they will make memories to last a life time! Their excitement is already palpable. As always, these opportunities would not be possible if staff were not willing to accompany the children and we thank Miss Slade, Mrs Sinclair, Mrs Derodra, Miss Moll and Mrs Deighan, who have all agreed to accompany the children on this visit. Whilst Miss Moll is away, Class 10 will be taught by Miss Fidge (current Year 6 teacher).

World Environmental Day: when we return to school we will be celebrating the ‘World Environment Day’ and Mrs Farr will be leading a whole school assembly for the children to teach them about looking after our amazing planet.

Year 5: on Wednesday, the children in Year 5 will be attending a visit to the Shree Ghanapathy Temple. Parents of children in this year group have been emailed separately about this visit. If you are able to volunteer to help on this visit, please let your child’s teacher know asap. Thank you.

Multiplication Test: the children in Year 4 will soon be taking their statutory Multiplication Tables Check, this is to determine whether or not the children are able to fluently recall their timetables up to 12. Further information for parents is available here:  Multiplication tables check: information for parents (text version) - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk). If your child would like to practice for this check over the half term break, Sound Check on Timetables Rockstars provides a very similar experience for the children (25 questions with 6 seconds to answer). Log in details have been sent home for this via your child.

Class 1: on Friday 9th June, the children in Class 1 have a Mufti Day (own clothes day). This is a prize that was one in a PTA event.

Lastly, we are currently recruiting for a Teaching Assistant. Vacancies are advertised on the school website and the closing date is Tuesday 6th June 2023. Please do spread the word!

    Have a lovely break.

    Week beginning 22nd May 2023

They say time flies when you are having fun and here we are with the final week of half term nearly upon us and what a half term, from top accolades in the swimming gala and the mixed football team being top of the league to Ofsted last week (and during SATs week). You couldn’t make it up!

As I sit here writing this, I can hear the bass boom of disco speakers and children’s laughter. Thank you, as ever, to our amazing PTA and parent volunteers who have organised the school disco tonight, for our children this evening. It certainly sounds like the children are having a fantastic time!

Class 6 Assembly: a huge well done to the children in Class 6 who wowed us with their fantastic assembly whilst they took us around the world to other continents. The children shared their Continent song, so we could remember the 7 continents of the world and also told us about the wildlife and issues faced in South America, such as the loss of the Amazon rainforest at an alarming rate. They also taught us about the legend about El Dorado and the searches for long lost treasures.  We were so proud to see all they had learnt and the facts they were able to retrieve and remember. Fantastic job, Class 6 and a massive well done to Miss Headley as well! Thank you also to all the parents who joined this spectacular assembly.

Catering: in an endeavour to ensure that all members of our school community can access our full catering provision offer, as of Monday this week, all meat options available to the children are now certified Halal. We are proud of our commitment to inclusivity and hope that this small change increases the options available to many of our children. This is in line with many food establishments across the UK who are becoming increasingly aware of customers diverse requirements and are adapting their menus accordingly.

Reading: please can we remind families that, in order to support your children to make good progress, our expectation is that they read for at least 10 minutes at home, a minimum of four times a week. Our teachers have raised concerns that there are some families who are rarely completing this aspect of homework which is in place for the whole school.  Please help us to help your children by providing regular opportunities for children to practice and share with you the learning that they have undertaken in school. Practice does not make perfect but it certainly does make progress! Regular reading at home also helps to develop confidence and a love of reading. If your child is a reluctant reader, and you would like some support with this, please do reach out to your child’s class teacher who will be happy to advise. Thank you.

Geography Day: Thursday 25th May is our whole school Geography day. You will have received a separate email about this already from Mrs Boylan, our Geography Leader. The theme of this event is ‘Around the World in 14 classes.’  Each class will be assigned a country and where possible we are asking for food donations that originate from that country for the children to try.  Please can we remind you that items containing nuts are not allowed.  If you are able to donate, please can they be brought to your child’s class teacher on the morning of 25th May. Thank you in anticipation of your support with this event.

Friday 26th May is the last day of this half term, and we finish by inviting you in to an Open Afternoon where you can come in and talk to your child/ren about their learning- from maths to geography! School will be open from 1:45pm. If you wish to join us, please come into your child’s class via the main office and you are welcome to take your child/ren home once you have finished viewing their learning. Summer Term Curriculum Maps (which shows what your child is learning this term), can be accessed on our website by clicking this link.

Class 8: will have their assembly on Thursday 29th June, this will start at 9:10am.

Lastly, some parents have asked us for term dates for next year. We can confirm the dates for the autumn term are as follows:

    Week Beginning 15th May 2023
What a week! As you know, we have had an Ofsted Inspection, Section 5, over the last two days. We will let you know the outcome as soon as are able – there is a confidentiality clause when schools are inspected and it takes up to 30 working days for the report to be published. When it is, we can share our news. Additionally, this week, alongside the Inspection, Year 6 had their SATs! A busy week – well done to our Year 6 children who worked really hard, with resilience. Thank you again.

Monday: KS1 children continue with their SATs and this will continue for the rest of the month, overtime. We are proud of you all as you sit your reading and maths tests and know you will be the best you can be. Remember, we don’t need a test to show how amazing you all are. Likewise, and as above – thank you to all staff who have been part of our lovely Year 2’s educational journey. You are all stars.
Junior Choir starts again on Monday and we will be rehearsing for the Music is Magic concert in June.

Wednesday: Mrs Macmahon will speak to our Year 6s going to Warlingham about transition and I believe she is bringing with her Mrs Bolton who, as you will be aware, also works at Warlingham! We look forward to seeing Mrs Macmahon and Mrs Bolton again!

Thursday: Year 6 have a transition travel workshop in the morning. This is run by TfL Safety and Citizenship and the children will hear about independently travelling to Secondary School, to include travelling safely in the dark.

Friday: is the PTA School Disco, the PTA have sent information about this previously. Further details on the PTA page.

    Have a great weekend!
